Job description

Coordinates activities surrounding the annual English Festival.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:  Serves as a member of the English Festival Committee (composed of faculty, staff, and community members) to plan the annual 3-day YSU English Festival (EF), which brings nearly 3,000 students to the YSU campus.  Helps prepare and promote the booklists for both the 7th through 9th grade and the 10th through 12th grade participants. Brainstorms insights for large-group sessions and journalism interviewees. Contacts potential speakers.

Coordinates with the co-chairs and a co-coordinator for EF planning. Participates in all meetings, including those for the Advisory Board, and Pre-Festival judging sessions.



Oversees development of Festival publications, including the Festival of Writing , information booklet, prize brochures, program, and track sheets. Coordinates with campus departments as needed. Tracks volunteers' survey responses and communicates as necessary to staff EF sessions.  

Liaises with schools (approximately 225). Trains new school contacts; oversees database containing registration details; fields questions through website, phone, and email; prepares and distributes fall mailings and school packets for training; collects and deposits monies from registration and activities.Tracks donations and maintains relationships with donors.



Works towards Festival success. Assists with prizes, maintains inventory, and transports Festival swag. Arranges judging and recognition of Pre-Festival contests. Runs information desk during event.



Other Functions and Responsibilities:  Maintains knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Access, Teams, and One Drive. Demonstrates great communication skills. Performs other related duties as assigned.



Equipment Operated:  Computer and other standard office equipment.



Work Schedule:  Works 10 hours per week August 16-May 15, according to schedule established in collaboration with supervisor.



Supervision Exercised:  Supervision is exercised over student employees and/or interns.  



Reports to: Jeff Buchanan, English Festival Co-chair

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree. Experience working with schools and students.



Preferred Qualifications:  Master's degree in English, education, or related field. Previous English Festival event, EF committee and/or Advisory Board experience; interest in and knowledge of young adult literature (including but not limited to membership or participation with the Western Reserve Ohio Teachers of English, NCTE, OCTELA, ALAN, etc.).
