Job description

Developmental Intern (Protection and Control)

Location:

White Plains, US

Summary

At the New York Power Authority, you will be empowered to think big, do good, and transform the energy industry. We are a collaborative team of over 2,400 energy technologists, IT specialists, business experts, hydro engineers, and diverse professionals leading the energy revolution. With state-of-the-art technology, advanced research and development, a modernized infrastructure, and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG), we provide New Yorkers with low-cost, clean, reliable power — and we are well on the way to becoming the first end-to-end digital utility in the country.

NYPA's Protection and Control engineering group develops design solutions for NYPA's protection and control and associated communication systems, performs system disturbance analysis and recommends protective relaying system modifications and/or additions. This work contributes to NYPA's VISION2030 goals to preserve and enhance the value of hydropower and be the leading transmission developer, owner, and operator for New York State.

This role will gain hands on exposure to one of Protection and Control group's primary responsibility of developing design packages and setting calculations in accordance with industry and reliability standards such as NERC, NPCC, and IEEE. This intern will work to develop breaker failure relay replacement packages and set calculations for Massena substation in preparation for an emergent relay replacement or planned capital project in the future. This will allow for better response time for relay replacement packages should the existing obsolete relays fail, to better NYS electrical system reliability and dependability.

This work aligns with students pursuing degree in electrical engineering. Knowledge of power systems engineering preferred.

Our paid 10-week Summer Developmental Internship program runs from June 4 - August 9. As an Intern, you will receive professional development, on-the job experience in the energy industry, exposure to executives, and networking opportunities to help build a solid foundation for your future career. Applications will close on April 8.

If you are passionate about our mission – to lead the transition to a carbon-free, economically vibrant New York through customer partnerships, innovative energy solutions, community engagement and the responsible supply of affordable, clean, and reliable electricity, we are looking for you!
