Job description

KPERS is located in Topeka, Kansas. We offer hybrid remote work schedule and employees are required to work onsite a specific number of days each week. KPERS' Auditors must be committed to integrity and service. They are responsible for auditing employer payroll records to ensure member criteria are appropriately applied according to laws, regulations, and policies. When discrepancies are found they work with employers to fix the issue and understand how to prevent it in the future.

The Auditor must have broad competence in aspects of management practices and all aspects of the Retirement System's operations. This position has frequent contact with agency staff and representatives from affiliated employers and may require up to 10 percent travel throughout the State of Kansas. Travel is limited to Monday through Friday and less than 2 percent may require overnight travel.

Essential Responsibilities

Audit affiliated employers' personnel and payroll records to ensure that criteria are appropriately applied according to laws, regulations, and policies and that those contributions are accurately calculated, reported, and remitted timely. Complete audit reports and supporting workpapers. Reports will note issues, discrepancies, and recommended actions. Submit audit reports to the Manager of Field Audit for review and approval.

Recommends remedial measures and helps employers develop policies to resolve issues. Assist employers and answer questions regarding reporting requirements. This position is the agency's hands-on, on-site contact in assisting employer representatives with submitting their reports.

Responsible for performing complex investigation and research to resolve arrearage, unreported or misreported contributions, and disputed employer and employee claims. Extensive historical research of employer records may be necessary to resolve issues. Work involves communication with employers and KPERS staff to ensure accuracy when completing adjustments.

Develops contacts and good communication with employers and KPERS staff. Justify, defend, negotiate, maintain goodwill and cooperation to reach compromises when information is disputed, or a substantial difference of opinion or diverse viewpoints exists. Extensive use of well-developed communication techniques and skills is required.

Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to meet the objectives of the Fiscal Services Division and KPERS, including, but not limited to, researching specific data regarding contributions made by a particular employer or coverage group.

Experience and Education Required

Two years of experience in examining internal work processes, financial and operational records, and controls to assess effectiveness, the accuracy of documents, and compliance with statutes, regulations, and professional/legal standards. A bachelor's degree with an emphasis in accounting from a four-year college is preferred and may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
