Job description
Overview The CDI & Coding Data Analyst will support both departments by developing and providing scheduled data packages and completing data reporting needs, as well as maintaining the shared departmental database, for both outpatient and inpatient settings. Works closely with CDI and Coding Leadership to communicate trends identified in their reviews and to make suggestions for continual process improvement in the form of written and verbal reports. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop analytic strategies to assess the quality and safety of care, and associated activities for the Outpatient and Inpatient Documentation Improvement efforts, provided at WellStar Health System.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions
1. Data Analysis and Reporting:
A. Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions
B. Accurately completes timely reports as requested by CDI and Coding Leadership in an executive summary format
C. Ensure and maintain the integrity of data that is utilized for any reports or dashboards
D. Provides other documentation or reports, as requested by the leadership, including but not limited to EPIC, 3M, Coding & CDI Auditing Software, other external data, etc.
E. Communicates trends identified in CDI and Coding reviews and makes suggestions for continual process improvement to CDI and Coding leadership in the form of written and verbal reports
F. Utilizes Excel or other platforms to build, compiles and distributes scheduled departmental data dashboards
G. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop analytic strategies to assess the quality and safety of care, and associated activities for the Outpatient and Inpatient Documentation Improvement efforts, provided at WellStar Health System
H. Oversees and maintains shared data sources (all spreadsheets/templates) for CDI and Coding departments and annually updates/reviews for data and departmental intranet page(s)
I. Utilize reporting functionality in the EPIC/EPSi, 3M 360 Encompass, Vizient and any other data sources
J. Assists CDI and Coding leadership with ad hoc report creation and completion of data projects for daily operations
K. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
L. Conducts validation of reports and special project tasks to support the Outpatient and Inpatient CDI/Coding functions and ensure appropriate data is entered, captured and reported for the accuracy and completeness of clinical information used for measuring and reporting physician and hospital outcomes
M. Build systems to transform raw data into actionable business insights
2. Process Improvement / Project Management:
A. Plans and oversees data related projects and timelines, considering the outlined scope and the overall departmental priorities and vision
B. Takes initiative to identify and apply best practices for data analytics relevant to CDI and Coding in both outpatient and inpatient settings
C. Partners with CDI, Coding, CI and IT Connect teams and makes suggestions for technology improvements, optimization and efficiencies for operational data
D. Serves on work teams as needed for operational and technical projects to provide CDI point of view
E. Represents the CDI Department on all CDI-related IT projects, sitting on project teams, coordinating, and performing testing, and communicating issues and resolution
F. Acts as a super user for CDI and Coding analytics tools; provide education to internal and external stakeholders
G. Participates in monthly, quarterly, and other CDI and Coding application testing, including reviewing documentation, preparing test plans, testing, validating, and preparing training materials and communications for the Outpatient and Inpatient CDI/Coding stakeholder departments
H. Available to act as a technology training resource for WellStar CDI and Coding team members, mentoring them on relevant software and applications, IT related issues, and other questions, as needed
I. Works on miscellaneous CDI and Coding IT initiatives and projects, as needed
3. Customer Support:
A. Understands business needs and objectives, and has the flexibility to adjust to shifting departmental priorities
B. In collaboration with Leadership, presents trends and report metrics relevant for CDI and Coding
C. Shows eagerness towards understanding customer needs to assess for data applicability
D. Provides data interpretation services for key customers

Qualifications Required Minimum Education
- Bachelor's Degree Graduation from a healthcare-related Bachelor's degree program Required or
- Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Health Informatics, Statistics, Health Information Management or other health care or data related field Preferred
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 3 years Relevant data reporting and analytics experience, including working in Tableau environment and/or Microsoft PowerBI Preferred and
- Proficiency in Outpatient and/or Inpatient CDI or coding, including chart review experience Preferred
Required Minimum Skills
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)
For all candidates, one of the following certifications is required within 1 year of hire date:
- Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) from AHIMA
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from AHIMA
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from AHIMA
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with Epic, 3M 360 Encompass and Vizient
- Understanding of diagnosis related groups (DRGs), Hierarchical Condition Category (HCC) & Risk-Adjustment Factor (RAF)
- Database management experience
- Background in healthcare regulations and outpatient and inpatient coding guidelines
- Familiarity with standard healthcare-related metrics
