POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides leadership, training, and support to the district in areas of school safety and crisis response and suicide prevention and intervention. Supports a comprehensive program that addresses student and staff safety, acute crisis intervention, barriers to learning, student behavior, and mental health issues. Provides equitable delivery of services under the framework of the Multitiered System of Support (MTSS). Facilitates projects related to health, crisis, and suicide intervention and prevention within CaSS. This position is grant-funded.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Comprehensive knowledge of school safety and crisis response;
- Considerable knowledge of current local, state, national, and global trends in school crisis prevention and intervention;
- Considerable knowledge of program evaluation to support continuous improvement;
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Apps;
- Effective time management and organizational skills;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree in school counseling, school social work or school psychology or a relevant teaching field;
- Three years of experience in crisis response, mental health services, or related work with children and adolescents.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold or be qualified to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License as a school counselor, school social worker, or school psychologist;
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Hold certification as a PREPaRE Trainer (Prevent, Reaffirm, Evaluate, Provide, and Respond, Examine);
- Experience supporting and training schools through coaching in managing school crisis events, including mental health crisis situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides support to schools during a school crisis event or mental health crisis situation.
- Collaborates with education stakeholders in enhancing and maintaining the district suicide prevention program, including Signs of Suicide.
- Assists with the implementation and monitoring of suicide, behavioral threat, and school crisis prevention and intervention protocols.
- Assists with professional learning and training in school crisis prevention and intervention, behavioral threat assessment, and suicide risk management.
- Provides leadership to school-based teams in crisis response and intervention, including suicide and behavioral threats.
- Attends professional development to stay abreast of cutting-edge best practices in the areas of school safety and crisis response.
- Collaborates with others to develop and provide social-emotional and behavioral wellness support for students and staff.
- Assists with the design and management of the district’s crisis prevention/intervention web page.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
