Compensation: $18.14-$22.67 Compensation Type: Hourly Employment Type: Regular Scheduled Weekly Hours: 20 Grade: NE09 Department: Athletic Administration and Operations Position Summary Manages natatorium which includes, but is not limited to: staffing (hiring, evaluation, testing, training, professional development and recruitment of lifeguards as well as deck supervisors). Must be committed to serving a diverse college community. Actively participates in and contributes to continuous quality improvement. Duties & Responsibilities Oversees natatorium facility and equipment maintenance. Prepares work orders Reviews and inspects aquatics facilities for safety hazards and other potential problems Documents all preventative and emergency maintenance with college personnel and service providers. Prepares and implements a comprehensive aquatic equipment maintenance and replacement plan. Hires, trains, schedules and evaluates deck supervisors and lifeguards. Orients new lifeguards and deck supervisors to job duties and responsibilities. Ensures that lifeguards and deck supervisors perform in accordance with the College’s established emergency action plans and procedures. Ensures that lifeguard and deck supervisors certifications are current and that lifeguards and deck supervisors are fully competent in monitoring swimmers, performing water rescue procedures and enforcing safety rules for patrons in and around the pools. In collaboration with Department Chair, schedules, coordinates and conducts in-service trainings. Develops, reviews and revises emergency response protocols per MAHC Will be included on aquatic schedule, performing all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, providing first aid and water rescues as necessary. Fills in for lifeguards as necessary. Ensures adequate coverage of pool areas is maintained during operating hours and that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on deck. Ensures aquatic facility meets minimum standards for licensing process; implements Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for staffing and the handling of hazardous materials, as per the MHAC. Responsible for the inventory and maintenance of pool equipment used by faculty and students for instruction and rescue. Maintains proper pool chemistry, temperature, Department of Health regulations, Certified Pool Operator standards and general pool environment. Monitors and regulates pool chemistry, tracking daily pool chemical balances; monitors chemical usage. Schedules chemical and mechanical maintenance; trouble shoots breakdowns in chemical balances. Ensures all mechanics are clean and functioning properly. Performs routine maintenance as needed Ensures chemical and water make-up systems are functioning properly; ensures the cleanliness of the pool deck and equipment. Establishes and maintains safety and maintenance checklists. Prepares and maintains documentation on equipment malfunctions, water chemistry test results, air quality test results and cleaning schedules; provides copies of documentation to Department Chair. Keeps the Department Chair well informed of pool maintenance needs, including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs. Interfaces with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. Provides input and feedback while responding to problems. Assists the Department Chair with the overall management of the aquatic facility. Manages the aquatics budget, which includes purchasing of all pool chemicals and instructional supplies. Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques (active victim, passive and submerged victim rescue).
Skills in the management of files and records
Skill in the completion of reports.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of aquatic equipment, including chair lift, backboards, vacuum, power washer, microphone systems, swim bench, and various pool swim devices.
Ability to demonstrate the following swim and rescue skills
Ability to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing; swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
Ability to tread water for two (2) minutes using only the legs.
Ability to complete a timed event within one (1) minute, 40 seconds.
Ability to complete the task of starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
Ability to surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-poundobject
Ability to return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface.
Ability to exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Ability to perform single and two-person CPR with a pocket mask and bag valve mask (BVM.)
Ability to perform rescue breathing and/or CPR continuously until EMS personnel arrive to take over and assist.
Ability to perform spinal in-line stabilization: shallow water head-splint and deep water in-line stabilization with rescue tube towing from the deep end to the shallow end of the pool area.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to exhibit professionalism, tact and patience when communicating with students, staff, faculty and the general public.
Ability to apply sustainability concepts into the work systems
Ability to apply Baldridge/ AQUIP based management approaches Physical Demands
Ability to lift and/or carry 45 pounds and assist with lifting up to 250 pounds and bring them onto the deck.
Additional Physical Demands
The work is typically performed sitting, intermittently standing, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
The work is typically performed at pool facility.
Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
Regularly exposed to vomit, fecal material and other bodily fluids
Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment.
Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illnesses).
Work Hours
Typically 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. May be required to work afterhours and/or weekends.
Location Requirements:
This position is not eligible for remote work.
