Position Overview
The Juniper Gardens Children's Project (JGCP; is seeking to hire a Student Hourly to assist with an NIH funded research project. We are seeking a student researcher for a study that aims to improve social communication skills of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) attending local preschools.
We are seeking a Student Hourly Researcher to work 30%-40% FTE (12-16 hours per week). The Student Hourly will work with guidance from the project Principal and Co-Investigators. Primary responsibilities will include assistance with behavioral coding, data entry and management, and team collaboration.
This position requires reliable transportation. It also requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with a team of professionals.
The position is at JGCP, located in downtown Kansas City, Kansas in the Children’s Campus of Kansas City building, 444 Minnesota Ave, Suite 300, Kansas City, KS 66101.
The initial training period will be onsite at JGCP. This position may then be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as training is completed and as deemed by supervisor.

Job Description
- Coding of behavioral data, data entry, and data management (75%).
- Assist with programming iPad with voice output apps to be used as a communication device (10%).
- Attend weekly research project meetings (10%).
- Assist with literature searches and preparation of dissemination activities (5%).
Required Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program at KU or KUMC with a course of study in speech language pathology, psychology, special education, applied behavioral sciences, or related field.
- Experience with behavioral observation systems for coding of human communication or other social behaviors, from live (e.g., classroom) or recorded behaviors.
- Experience in the use of Excel and Word – Microsoft Office Applications.
- Effective organizational skills and attention to detail as evidenced by application materials and the interview process.
- Strong oral communication skills as determined through the interview process.
- Reliable transportation.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:
- have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
- be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
- be enrolled in summer session or
- be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework in speech language pathology, psychology, special education, applied behavioral sciences, or related field.
- Experience collecting behavioral data on children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities using Noldus Observational software.
- Six months experience with the conduct of research on funded projects.
- Experience with graphic design, such as Adobe Creative Suite (Rush, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).

Advertised Salary Range
$15 per hour commensurate with education and experience
Work Schedule
12-16 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
