Student Leadership Development Admin

Position Summary

The Residential Student Leadership Administrator oversees the student leadership development and advising responsibilities of the student groups that originate within the on-campus residence halls and apartments, including but not limited to the Residence Hall Association (RHA), University Apartments Council of Residents (UACOR), and the Owen Graduate Association (OGA). This position helps develop student leaders for all recognized and funded student clubs and organizations in the residence halls and on-campus apartments. The Student Leadership Development Administrator provides leadership, training, and ongoing development for other team members also serving as advisors to recognized student clubs and organizations in the residence halls.    

The Student Leadership Development Administrator directs, plans, and provides opportunities for residential students and staff to develop and enhance inclusive leadership skills and behaviors. This includes working with the Residence Education and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) units in supporting the student learning goals of the residential curriculum as it relates to individual development, community development, and inclusive living and learning.  

This position is a liaison to the University Activities Board (UAB), Council of Graduate Students (COGs), Associated Students of MSU (ASMSU), the Council of Racial and Ethnic Students (CORES), the Council of Progressive Students (COPS), the Department of Student Development and Leadership as well as other campus-wide student and service organizations.  

Characteristic Duties & Expectations:

• Advise the major groups affiliated with Residence Education and Housing Services including but not limited to the Residence Hall Association (RHA), University Apartments Council of Residents (UACOR), and the Owen Graduate Association (OGA) and provides guidance and support to all other student groups affiliated with REHS. 
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate the Graduate Assistant for Leadership Development; indirect supervision of members of the RHA leadership team and executive board 
• Advise student delegations and may attend annual regional and national student leadership conferences, such as: Great Lake Affiliation of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH); National Affiliation of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH); and Michigan Affiliation of College and University Residence Hall (MACURH)CURH)  
• Advise, consult, and represent unit with various constituents, committees, community, and University groups regarding services/programs 
• Advise student groups in their planning of major events ensuring that all applicable University stakeholders are involved, including but not limited to: Office of the General Counsel, Department of Police and Public Safety, Division of Student Life and Engagement, and the Wharton Center for Performing Arts.  
• Educate student leaders on the appropriate financial policies and procedures; advises students on processes that focus on equitable allocation of resources 
• Organize and facilitate ongoing leadership development roundtables and workshops for executive board members and residence hall student leaders   

• Assist student leadership groups with collaborative programming efforts and annual transitions 
• Provide consultation and resources to Residence Education staff regarding advising student groups  
• In partnership with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion unit: 

• Develop resources to support neighborhood caucus organizations such as the Black, Queer, and Trans Caucus groups 
• Work with advisors to facilitate equitable recruitment, selection, hiring, training, and recognition processes for residential student leaders with particular attention to diverse/representative leadership and membership 

• Support the ongoing development of student leadership programs with respect to the learning goals and outcomes of the residential curriculum 
• Oversee assessment efforts for leadership programs and residence hall student organizations   
• Submit and verify time records for student employees
• Collaborate with business officers to ensure the ethical, accurate, and appropriate use of student organization funds.
• Engage in projects that support the objectives of the unit, department, and division 
• Other duties as assigned 

Work Hours

This position holds daily work week hours, 8am-5pm; however, weeknight and occasional weekend hours expected to attend residential student organization meetings, events, and trainings.  In consultation with the supervisor, daily hours are adjusted to account for these non-standard work hours.

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Administration or a Behavioral Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Written and verbal fluency in foreign language may be required.

Additional Qualifications:

Work experience in residence hall administration and advising.

• Excellent administrative and organizational skills 
• An understanding of how to promote student leadership, learning, and success in a diverse environment with an emphasis on underserved and marginalized communities 
• Demonstrated skills of leadership and communication 
• Strong writing, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills 
• An enthusiastic interest in working with college students and have knowledge of issues impacting college students, student development theory, and its application in a student housing setting  
• Ability to infuse creative, compassionate, culturally competent approaches to leadership and skill development 
• Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse parties within and beyond the institution 
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+, and gender backgrounds and incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
