Associate Acquisitions Editor

Cognella

Location

San Diego, CA | United States

Job description

Are you currently an editorial assistant, associate editor, sales representative, or even a hungry college graduate who wants to join a proven team that is revolutionizing the way professors develop content both for their courses and the broader market? Do you have previous sales experience in another industry but are looking to get into an exciting acquisitions role in publishing? Cognella is hiring multiple acquisitions editors for generalist acquisitions roles (our generalists sign new projects in all disciplines). We are looking for candidates who have some sales experience coupled with a naturally curious conversational style and a “fire-in-the-belly” to succeed.

Position Summary:
As an Associate Acquisitions Editor with Cognella, you will acquire new titles and manage existing titles to exceed your assigned territory publication and sales goals. You will manage all phases of contact with potential authors, including conceptualizing the project, negotiating the publishing agreement, and maintaining the author relationship through submission of initial chapters and/or reading list and throughout the process via coordination with team members. You will work the phones, Zoom, and emails hard. We sign at a faster pace than traditional editors, so you must love working in a fast, goal-oriented environment.

We are looking for candidates who:

Total Compensation includes competitive base salary + commissions + bonuses and is based on both 1) annual goal attainment, and 2) assigned professional level and experience. Junior Professional Level I starting total compensation is $64k (base rate of $45k) and increases to $69k at Junior Professional Level II. Bonus and commission potential are prorated in the first plan year and are at full level and uncapped in subsequent plan years. Top experienced performers can progress with Cognella into professional and senior level acquisitions editor roles, which can exceed $120k total annual compensation.

Cognella also provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package for full-time employees. We offer a health, vision, and dental plan at a 70% contribution match for the individual; generous vacation with Cognella’s flexible vacation policy of non-accrued paid time off; holiday (12 holidays/year); sick time (10 days/year); and 401K matching plan (4% match on the first 5% of an employee’s annual compensation after one year of employment (100% match of the first 3% and 50% match from 3%-5% of an employee’s annual compensation)); and anniversary, wellness, public transportation, and educational programs.

Reports to: Managing Executive Editor

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Start Date: Immediate

Location: Solana Beach (San Diego County), CA. Daily in-office schedule with possible hybrid/telecommuting schedule after ramp-up and goal attainment.

Although Cognella currently embraces a hybrid remote/in-office work schedule for employees in San Diego County that balances the flexibility of telecommuting with the benefits and necessity of in-person work and collaboration, each role and department is different. Cognella reserves the right to change its telecommuting, remote, or hybrid work policies at any time. In order to successfully work remotely, employees must provide a proper home workstation set-up which includes internet connectivity and a workspace large enough to accommodate dual monitors, laptop, and accessories that is free from distractions.

To Apply: For consideration, please email a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. All submissions will be held in confidence.
