Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The University of North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center (NC OSHERC ) is a NIOSH -funded Education and Research Center, located at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. NC OSHERC Targeted Research Training ( TRT ) Program has an opening for a post-doctoral fellowship position for an individual interested in pursuing advanced research training in occupational health and safety. The NC OSHERC has a range of expertise to support post-doctoral training including, but not limited to, first responder health and safety, worksite injury prevention, Total Worker Health , chronic disease prevention, occupational exposure, women’s health, and occupational epidemiology. This is a full-time position for a maximum of two years. A start date in or prior to May 2024 is desirable, however, a later start date is negotiable.

Position Summary The post-doctoral candidate is expected to be familiar with conducting human subjects research. Prior training and experience with manuscript and grant writing, project management, and ability to contribute to off-site data collection efforts are desirable.

Training will be interdisciplinary and focused on the trainee’s specific needs, including mentored research experience under senior researchers in interdisciplinary research and participation in seminars. Duties include data collection and analysis, publishing in the peer-reviewed literature, participating in seminars and workgroups, and collaborating on research grant applications. Training may also include didactic coursework, depending on training goals and needs. Opportunities for teaching may also be available.

The post-doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to conduct occupational health and safety research in close collaboration with the NC OSHECR faculty at UNC -CH, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. This Fellowship also offers an opportunity to work with researchers, public health practitioners, and clinicians across disciplines, as well as to become involved with existing collaborations with community groups, non-profit organizations, employers, and professionals. This broad network provides a rich, dynamic environment for trainees and substantial opportunities for research.

The potential fellow must have recently earned a PhD in kinesiology, public health, injury epidemiology, occupational health and safety, or other related fields and is interested in cross-disciplinary training and research experience is encouraged to apply.

The annual salary is set according to the experience of the candidate. The position is contingent upon funding.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Applicants must have a doctoral degree in kinesiology, exercise science, epidemiology, safety research, ergonomics, behavioral science, medicine, or a related field.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Candidates must also have less than five years of post-doctorate experience, a demonstrated record of individual initiative in research, strong analytic skills, and the potential to become an independent academic researcher within two to three years.
