You will create and review mechanical equipment designs, drawings, specifications, involving existing technology or applications; works on segments of broader or more complex projects and ensures that projects meet specifications, standards and performance requirements within their area of expertise.
Job Description
- Creates drawings, specifications, etc. of existing technology or applications and ensures that assignments meet standards and performance requirements within area of expertise.
- Uses the CAD/CAM and database systems and facilities to make layouts, analyze designs, evaluate equipment systems, and generate new equipment designs.
- Prepares documentation, information, communications, and engineering specifications and ensures conformance to all policies and procedures related to engineering functions, labor reporting and systems reporting.
- Conducts analysis, ensures that designs are workable, makes recommendations and develops alternative solutions with conclusions reviewed by higher levels.
- Tests and evaluates prototypes and models to determine design limits and needed improvements. Prepares test reports and closure reports on assignments.
- Prepares reports, correspondence, procedures, specifications, and technical calculations. Prepares technical data and papers for sales personnel, customers and publications using good internal presentation and report writing skills.
- Assists and/or checks the work of drafters and designers and less experienced engineers. Helps prepare project plans, schedules, budgets, and status reports.
Skills Required
- 6 - 10 years of experience in a similar role
- Experience in creating or reviewing production drawings (weldments and machining)
- Experience with hydraulics, such as HPU's, winches, etc. is a plus.
- Experience in designing mechanical equipment (sheaves, winches, etc.)
- Proficient in classical analysis methods and in writing equipment specifications
- Understanding/experience using FEA
- Strong command of English language; highly proficient in spoken and written English
- Strong knowledge in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for 3D part and assembly modeling, layout and design and working.
- Some understanding of internal economic factors affecting projects to which assigned.
- Working knowledge of:
- specific technologies, procedures, products and applications
- at least one Client or related product line - exposure to other lines plus some knowledge of competitor products
- SolidWorks for 3D part and assembly modeling, layout and design and working with designers to create 2D drawings from SolidWorks models.
- Knowledge of trends & economic conditions affecting the technical field
- AutoCAD
- Demonstrated ability to:
- create functional & cost-effective designs that meet specification requirements with supervision.
- Demonstrates some capability for conceptualizing designs.
Education/Training/Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering.
Additional Requirements
- We are looking for an engineer with 8 or so years' experience in real project work (i.e., not focused entirely on academics, or not coming from a company that does different type work than Client)
- The engineer should be a degreed mechanical engineer, and not another discipline of engineering (structural and civil sometimes look similar, but they aren't)
- The engineer should be able to demonstrate actual design experience through examples they completed in their resume. There shouldn't be words like "managed a design" or "worked with a team" to demonstrate actual hands-on design experience.
- It is very helpful if the engineer's experience includes work with large castings and forgings and weldments. Not absolutely mandatory, but it a huge time saver as they come up to speed here. Large equipment companies that both engineer and build the equipment are very good experience to show in the resume.
- It is always good if the engineer has hydraulic experience. At one time or another, we have to design or specify new hydraulic equipment, or troubleshoot an existing hydraulic system. When there is a problem, it takes a great deal of knowledge and competence with hydraulic circuits to solve it.
- Analytical competence is separate from design competence; however, we also need the engineer to be proficient in classical hand stress calculations, setting up those equations to be solved, and correctly applying those equations to a given structure for analysis. This goes hand in hand with the evolution of a design.
- The applicant needs to be able to write well. This is hard to evaluate during an interview process, so I rely in part on the 3rd stage (presentation) to look at this. At Client, we spend a great deal of time writing various documents for project work, to include email to clients and within the company.
- Experience in an engineering and production company is a huge plus. These engineers have an advantage over someone who has worked only in academia because they understand practical design.
- Experience with FEA is desirable, but not absolutely required. We will teach our method and best practice here. I won't make a lack of FEA experience a showstopper.
- Ability to solve problems. This really can't be demonstrated on a resume. I look carefully for this quality in the first interview. Usually, this is the reason the candidate doesn't make the 2nd interview.
- They need to be looking for long term employment and demonstrate interest in what Client does.
