Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position performs routine healthcare at the Hernando County Health Department. Performs duties appropriate for a Health Support Technician including Greeting and escorting clients, working in the lab and clinic area, and interviewing clients for obtaining pertinent information. Screening and schedules client’s appointments for all medical health clinics. Assisting in preparing client medical records for scheduled clinic visits, obtaining subjective and objective data to document on medical record, assisting providers with patient exams and procedures. Providing laboratory services, such as performing venipunctures, obtaining specimens, performing laboratory tests, and preparing specimens for transport.

 

Performs clinical duties under the supervision of the clinical supervisor and Director of Nursing. 

 

Clinic[s]:

  1. Obtains heights, weights, measures head circumferences, temperatures, pulse, respirations, blood pressure readings.
  2. Performs visual, color and hearing tests and electrocardiograms. 
  3. Obtains health history information from client and/or guardian.
  4. Completes and/or updates appropriate forms/portions of the electronic health record, i.e. but not limited to Problem List, Medication List, Lead Risk Assessment, Anticipatory Guidelines.
  5. Assists providers i.e., MD, APRN, RN, in the physical examination and treatment of clients.
  6. Assist providers with case management, reviewing case management folders, ensuring that follow up labs and studies have been completed and that clients have returned for follow up.
  7. Set up examination room/clinics, clean and prepare exam rooms between visits.
  8. All client care is documented according to local SOP and guidelines.

 

Responsible for making appropriate copies and attachments for referral to specialists and community partners. Forward prescriptions to Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) staff, as appropriate. Complete appointment slip and billing slips as appropriate.

 

Laboratory:

Performs phlebotomy and finger sticks as well as other laboratory procedures. Collect lab specimen and serve as backup or as requested in the laboratory, does the following according to TAG/SOP:

  1. Perform laboratory tests, i.e., urinalysis (U/A), pregnancy test, hemocults, blood sugars, hepatitis screening, Syphilis (RPR's), Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV's), hematocrit (HCT), sickle cell test, PKU's, lead screening, hemoglobin (HGB), and serological testing. Other tests as indicated by medical provider or as changes to gold standards become active. 
  2. Performs venipuncture and obtains specimens in proper tubes, use centrifuge, and separate specimens into components as indicated.
  3. Maintains a working knowledge of all lab equipment.
  4. Responsible for recording and or documenting all results in the electronic health record.
  5. Prepare all specimens with proper packaging and mailing for transport to appropriate laboratories.
  6. Perform and log results of quality control tests on all equipment, i.e. hematocrit/hemoglobin machine.
  7. Monitor and record temperatures of the refrigerator(s) in the laboratory area.

 

Restocks clinic areas and rooms, maintain par level of supplies. Responsible for ordering all medical supplies for the Brooksville site.

 

Additional Duties:

1. Review and document receipt of incoming clinic supplies as needed or as requested.

2. Stock clinic[s], exam rooms and lab daily as needed or requested. 

3. Clean clinic areas daily and the lab when assigned.

4. Prepares SHARPS containers/waste management box for bi-weekly disposal. Replace SHARPS containers in clinic areas.

5. Inventory supplies to maintain and restock supplies.

6. Inventory contents of the emergency kit monthly.

Enter FLSHOTS data, including demographics, as needed. Scanning of clinical documents in HMS as needed.

Answer telephone for incoming calls regarding clinics, appointments and programs. Responsible for making appointments, reviewing proper computer screens to determine availability of appointments, and selecting the most desirable time and date. Cancel appointments as requested by client.

Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-services, training, seminars and other professional and staff development activities.

Responsible for securing the designated information set for the purposes of protecting confidentiality, data integrity and appropriate access, for all information, both confidential and public record, which is stored in hard copy or electronic formats.

Performs other work-related duties as needed or requested.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Qualifications:

Experience using computers to document medical care.

One or more years of experience with laboratory procedures.

One or more years of clerical experience working in a medical professional office.

One or more years of experience working as customer service or a reception desk.

 

Preferred: One or more years of experience with phlebotomy or finger sticks.
