As a Veterinarian, you will:
- Evaluates and determines the disposition of incoming animals by providing the necessary medical services.
- Provides medical care to all shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments in an ethical manner.
- Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter animals.
- Ensures appropriate medication is administered by shelter veterinary staff as directed.
- Advises and oversees euthanasia to be performed on shelter animals. Determine appropriate humane euthanasia decisions concerning animals who cannot be adopted due to medical and/or behavioral issues based on standard operating procedures and/or professional assessments/diagnosis.
- Provides on-call services for shelter animal emergencies.
- Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses. Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of Animal Services.
Coordinate and Direct Shelter Medical Operations
- Coordinates and directs shelter medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices.
- Take immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
- Continuously improves the medical management program and ensures high-quality medical care and services for shelter guests including those temporarily in foster care, focusing on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems thereby increasing adoptions and decreasing adoption returns.
- Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
- Develops and maintains knowledge of Animal Services veterinary medicine best practices; updates code knowledge through regular continuing education; develops and conducts training in areas of expertise; participates in professional development activities. Identifies developing trends in shelter veterinary medicine that are in-line with the City's existing philosophy regarding animal care.
- Participates in professional, technical, and business groups related to the duties and objectives of the Animal Services Division. Attend City Council Meetings as requested.
- Provide excellent customer service; ensure it is a priority across the division. Communicate courteously and effectively with citizens to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
- Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter. Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra- and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to Sugar Land Animal Services.
- Communicates directly with the Director or Animal Services Manager regarding care of all shelter animals. Makes recommendations and collaborates with the Director and Animal Services Manager in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of animals in the animal shelter's care.
Animal Advisory Board
- Serves as a member of the City's Animal Advisory Board and represents the Animal Services Division.
- Prepares and presents discussion topics related to veterinary medical care, processes and procedures to the Animal Advisory Board and City Council for consideration and approval.
Division Service Levels, Performance Measures, Policies and Procedures
- Stays well-informed regarding the best practices for the fulfillment of the City's Animal Services Division areas of responsibility and roles. Establish and oversee veterinary medical processes and procedures.
- Provides veterinary leadership and oversight for the Animal Services Division, including all medical operations, vehicles/equipment, and materials/supplies.
- Provides guidance to staff for situations requiring immediate medical problem solving.
- Participates in interviewing and hiring decisions for shelter veterinary technician staff.
General Responsibilities
- Keeps all appropriate records, as needed, to maintain compliance with City record retention policies. Prepare and submit documentation as needed to respond to open records requests.
- Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position.
- Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
- Stay abreast of, and comply with, all City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director and/or their designee(s).
Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate must be extremely
organized and able to manage the logistics of multiple duties with
professionalism and strong communication skills. In addition, they will have a strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment-both critical for success in the role, as are high levels of
accuracy, timeliness and dependability . Ideal candidates will also look for innovative, trailblazing solutions to challenges We are looking for someone who can establish and
maintain effective working relationships within the organization and work effectively with all levels of employees and management.
Formal Education and Experience: - Graduate degree from an accredited veterinary college (DVM or VMD).
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal animal shelter, with at least one year of supervisory responsibility in a public sector or not-for-profit environment.
Training (License and/or Certification): - Valid Texas Driver License.
- Licensure in good standing to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas.
- Euthanasia Technician Certification or comparable certification is required.
