Job Description and Duties

Do you like working with people and wildlife? Are you interested in helping the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) conserve bobcats? CDFW's Wildlife Diversity Program (WDP) is seeking a qualified applicant to help develop and implement a statewide bobcat management plan. The position will be located in West Sacramento and the successful applicant will work closely with other Wildlife Branch staff and staff from CDFW's Regional offices. This position requires education and experience in wildlife biology, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a commitment to teamwork. Experience with bobcats and/or other carnivores, study design, and conservation plan development is ideal.

Under the supervision of the Wildlife Diversity Program manager, the Environmental Scientist will assist the Bobcat Team lead with population assessments and related investigations in support of the development and implementation of California’s bobcat management plan. The incumbent helps identify research needs, plans and conducts bobcat and other mesocarnivore field studies, manages camera traps and related photo databases, evaluates methods for minimizing human-wildlife conflict, and conducts capture and collaring efforts. The incumbent closely coordinates with other regions and Department functions, as well as other affected and involved local, State, and Federal agencies. The incumbent conducts literature searches, prepares draft reports and correspondence, and answers routine questions from the public relative to Department’s bobcat conservation and management efforts.
