Summary: The Special Education Coordinator oversees the provision of special education services within our transfer charter high school. Serving a significant population of students with disabilities, this role emphasizes coordination, program administration, compliance with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) regulations, and collaboration with the NYC Department of Education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Development and Implementation:
- Design and implement evidence-based instructional programs tailored for NYC transfer high school students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with school teams to integrate special education services, aligning them with the unique needs of transfer students.
- Ensure IEPs are crafted and reviewed to reflect the specific requirements and ambitions of our student population.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Guarantee adherence to NYSED and NYC Department of Education special education mandates.
- Coordinate and oversee annual reviews, reevaluations, and ensure timely and accurate reporting to appropriate city and state agencies.
- Monitor and report on the efficacy of our special education program to school leadership and governance boards.
Coordination and Collaboration:
- Collaborate closely with teachers, guidance counselors, advisors, and other relevant personnel to ensure the seamless provision of services.
- Facilitate and lead special education meetings, interfacing with representatives from the NYC DOE and other city stakeholders.
- Engage parents, guardians, and the local community, fostering a partnership in supporting our unique student population.
Resource Management:
- Oversee the equitable distribution of special education resources, ensuring every student benefits from the tailored support they require.
- Manage the special education budget, working closely with the school's financial team and ensuring alignment with charter guidelines.
Professional Development:
- Stay updated with NYC-specific special education initiatives, research, and best practices.
- Provide, promote, and participate in professional development opportunities, ensuring that our staff remains at the forefront of special education practices.
