Essential Job Functions - Performs comprehensive physical therapy screenings, assessments, interventions, and reassessments for the residents served to determine the type of therapy services that need to be delivered.
- Communicates results of treatment programs verbally and in writing to appropriate personnel. Records progress of each resident receiving physical therapy.
- Records treatment, response, and progress in resident’s medical chart.
- Evaluates the effectiveness and outcomes of the physical therapy interventions at various stages. Adjusts treatments to achieve maximum benefits.
- Confers with physicians and other practitioners to obtain additional medical information for the residents, suggests appropriate revisions in treatment programs based off medical information, and integrates physical therapy treatment with other aspects of the individual’s health care.
- Coordinates with outside service providers, such as home skilled nursing, wound care, rehab/therapy consultants, exercise therapists, aquatics, and other referral services.
- Manages the adaptive equipment technicians and provides direct oversight in the selection, fitting, maintenance, inventory, and utilization of adaptive equipment for the residents such as wheelchairs, walkers, braces, splints, etc.
- Instructs, motivates, and assists residents to perform various physical activities while utilizing supportive devices and adaptive equipment.
- Provides assistance to individuals and staff on the use, care, and maintenance of adaptive equipment. This includes education of direct care staff, management, families and others on the use and care of adaptive equipment and to problem solve as needed.
- Determines safe and efficient methods of transitioning, positioning, handling, facilitating movement and transferring residents.
- Trains direct support staff and other members of the residential and day program teams on proper techniques and procedures for assisting residents with physical therapy exercise and activities.
- Instructs the family members of the individual’s served on treatment procedures and exercises that can be continued at home.
- Proactively collaborates and functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, including direct support staff, nurses, managers, behavior and program specialists, etc.
- In consultation with the Medical Director, procures prescriptions as needed.
- Orients, instructs, and directs work activities of physical therapy aides and students when necessary.
- Plans and conducts lectures and training programs on physical therapy and related topics for residential staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Participates in ongoing research for best practices in physical therapy; specifically in the field of Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.
- Offers flexibility in their work schedule to meet the needs of the residents served.
- All other duties as assigned by supervisors.
