The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking an undergrad student in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering to work with professional Mechanical Engineers and scientists to design, analyze, manufacture, assemble, and test hardware programs in the Civil Space (CVS) division.
SDL supports a variety of missions, including NASA's vision to reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind and the Department of Defense's aim to protect our Nation on the ground, in the air, and in space. Major Responsibilities: - Assisting with the design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of prototype, engineering units, flight-like and ground support equipment (GSE) hardware
- Reporting and presentation of work results
- Assisting with the testing of related hardware
- Assisting with creating drawings and travelers, parts tracking and kitting
- Creating test procedures and reports
- Student employees will work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week when school is not in session
- Students will be required to work graveyard shifts and weekends when certain testing requires it. There is some flexibility in scheduling
- The duration of employment is expected to begin as soon as possible and is expected to continue until graduation, contingent upon funding & performance
Required Qualifications: - Must be a USU student, preferably enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Program or similar
- Successful completion of an engineering CAD course
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision once trained
- Ability to work closely in a team with students and professionals
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues
- Ability to take ownership for tasks and take responsibility for outcomes
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Document Suite
- Self-motivated, dependable, detail oriented
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
- Ability to balance work and school responsibilities
- Hands on experience with basic tools
Preferred Qualifications: - Any machine shop or fabrication experience
- Experience and interest in with drafting metallic parts and assemblies for fabrication
- Long term interest in solid mechanics and precision structures
- Long term interest in thermal (radiative & conductive) analysis
- Long term interest in custom design and fabrication
