FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who are my students?
You will teach rising third-, fourth-, fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, or eighth-grade students from our district and charter partner schools. Our students enroll voluntarily and have a wide range of academic preparation.
How big are my classes?
You will teach two academic classes of 12-16 students and two elective classes of 12-16 students.
What are the hours?
The hours are 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Two pre-scheduled evening events extend until 8:30 p.m.; these events are Family Night and Teach Local Night.
Do I need to pursue an education major or minor to apply?
No! Our summer teaching fellows come from a range of majors; this may be the first time you're considering teaching.
Am I eligible to apply?
You are eligible if you will be 17 by April 15, are a US citizen or permanent resident; our AmeriCorps summer teaching fellowship is not a job, and it does not require employment eligibility verification.
Do I need to submit official transcripts?
No, please submit unofficial transcripts unless you have official transcripts readily available. We do not want you to spend money securing transcripts for your application. If you do not have easy access to unofficial transcripts, please feel free to submit screenshots of your grades from your college portal.
Where is the program located?
Our programs are hosted by our district and/or charter partners, including Blackstone Valley Prep, Bridge Boston Charter School, Dallas Public Schools, Denver Public Schools, District of Columbia Public Schools, Holyoke Public Schools, Providence Public Schools, and Worcester Public Schools.
My college offers summer internship funding. Can GT sign my paperwork to confirm I have completed the program and met the requirements?
Yes! We are happy to help you with your paperwork. GT will not duplicate external funding, but we are happy to support you in securing a larger scholarship from another source.
Can I submit separate applications to each city?
Please submit only one application. You will be asked to indicate your preferred location and whether you would like to be considered for other cities.
I don't live in the cities GT serves, but I really want to teach. Do you provide housing?
We do not provide housing. If you decide to teach in-person, we encourage you to connect with local fellows to identify summer housing options.
What happens after I submit my application?
We will review your application and invite promising candidates to a virtual interview. You will have your decision within four weeks of the application deadline. You will have five days to decide whether to enroll.
Who is the point of contact in case I have any questions?
You can reach out to Maria Medina Macias, our Director of Recruitment and Special Projects, with questions. She can be reached at [email protected] .
