Job description
Please submit your resume and letter of interest to Vanessa David ([email protected]), Faculty Affairs Liaison for the Department of Emergency Medicine
The Assistant Research Scientist will help lead projects for the Weil Institute's Data Science Team. The major area of ongoing research for the team is to build clinical decision support tools that predict diseases and patient outcomes. Aligned with this goal, a focus area of this position is to understand the impact a model has on clinician workflows, such as model usage and intervention delivery, and patient outcomes once it is deployed. Post-deployment monitoring will help ensure continued accuracy of the models and support for clinicians. The candidate for this position will help lead projects that leverage multiple data modalities from various sources, such as EHR and bedside monitors, with the goal of achieving an earlier and more accurate prediction of patient disease or deterioration. Improved predictions will give the clinicians more time to act and prevent negative outcomes. The Data Science team at the Weil Institute engages in collaborations within Michigan Medicine and works directly with corporate partners. The candidate will work with our collaborators to help address their research problems, study design, and project goals. The position will increase our capacity and ability to support the needs of our collaborations. It will also increase the research activity and outreach of the Weil Institute. This is aligned with the team's overall goals of building and implementing tools that improve patient outcomes and reducing the length of hospital stay, as well as building relationships within Michigan Medicine and with corporate partners.
The role of this position is to develop predictive analytics that will help improve the treatment of patients in critical care areas such as intensive care units, emergency department and general hospital wards. Our models focus on a multitude of different clinical conditions including trauma, cardiac and neurologic emergencies, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome and heart failure among others. We use rich, large datasets from a variety of sources including electronic health records, bedside monitors, PACS radiology system and wearable sensors. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with clinicians on applications of data science and analytics in medicine with an extensive level of access to large clinical datasets. Research in the Weil institute focuses on developing clinical decision support systems and real-time multimodal analytic platforms to translate advanced data science solutions into critical care. This position will be responsible for writing and submitting grants to fund additional research.
