Job Title: Assistant Director, Career Services - Student Experience

Supervises: Departmental Student Workers/Graduate Assistants
Job Summary: The Assistant Director of Career Services Student Experience at St. John's University, Queens Campus, plays a pivotal role in providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, and fostering their career development and success.
This position is responsible for creating and implementing innovative programs, services, and initiatives that enhance the overall student experience as they are introduced to University Career Services. These programs may include small group sessions or large-scale events to increase student engagement with Career Services and enhance their sense of belonging. Additionally, the Assistant Director will supervise Career Services' student workers and/or graduate assistants who will be responsible for the in-person and virtual reception and welcome of students, alumni, employers, faculty and staff to Career Services.
The Assistant Director will liaise and collaborate with Human Resources to develop initiatives/programming focused on career readiness and understanding the transferable skills gained through on-campus employment and internships.
The Assistant Director will oversee the day-to-day operation of the central office, including the coordination of on-campus recruiting activities and reservation of department space, with the support of student workers and in collaboration with other professional staff. This person will also be responsible for access to, and inventory management of, the Career Closet which provides free, professional attire for students.
The Assistant Director is expected to contribute to the overall success of University Career Services by actively participating in strategic planning and collaborating with other university departments to support the broader goals of student development and success.

Student Experience:
Develop, assess, and implement innovative programs, services, and initiatives to enhance the overall student experience within University Career Services. The programs may include 'pop up' events, drop-in advising, small group career readiness workshops, etc.
Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, fostering an atmosphere conducive to their career development and success.
Develop and maintain relationships with students and alumni, providing support and guidance throughout their career development journey.
Collaborate with colleagues across campus to develop and integrate career development initiatives into the broader student experience.
Create strategies to actively engage students in career-related activities and opportunities.
Supervision and Leadership:
Supervise and provide guidance to Career Services' student workers and/or graduate assistants who support reception and drop-in advising.
Oversee the in-person and virtual reception and welcome of students, alumni, employers, faculty, and staff to Career Services, providing superior service to all constituents.
Manage the team of student workers and career peers who support the career closet, implementing best practices to provide student access and curate clothing inventory.
Collaboration with Human Resources:
Liaise and collaborate with Human Resources to design and implement a student employment initiative to create a high impact practice, providing programming and guidance that allow students to gain valuable and transferable skills through on-campus employment.
Create and provide tools and programming to equip on-campus employers/supervisors to create job postings, search for candidates, onboard new student workers, set expectations and provide resources for success.
Operations:
Contribute to the day-to-day operation of the central office, ensuring smooth and efficient functioning.
Coordinate space reservations for the office suite, including OCR.
Collaborate with other professional staff to optimize the overall functioning of Career Services.
Stay informed about industry trends and other effective means to catalyze student engagement.
Engage in professional development activities to enhance personal and team effectiveness.
Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures related to career services and student employment initiatives.
Competencies:
Must be collaborative, self-directed, outcome oriented, and able and willing to work under pressure with frequent interruptions.
Possess strong customer service focus for internal and external constituents and success working both independently and in cross-functional teams.
Must have familiarity with employment and industry trends.
Proficient in the use of web-based software. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel required.
Supervisory responsibilities: Graduate assistants and/or student workers
Work Environment This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 lbs.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This position is full-time and the expected hours are generally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position occasionally requires extended hours and weekend work.
Required Education and Experience:
Minimum of three to five years of experience in career services, human resources, career coaching, corporate recruiting/business development, or related field.
Proven success in developing and maintaining internal and external relationships.
Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, MicroSoft365 and database software (e.g., Handshake, Access, etc.)
Familiarity with higher education

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $62,400. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
