Harris & Associates is seeking a
Technical Editor to play an integral part in the development of technical documents for various projects. Our ideal candidate is a curious, detail-oriented, resourceful, and flexible editor with experience in the environmental planning and compliance and/or engineering industry who can demonstrate excellent editorial skills and sound decision-making to manage various elements of complex technical document production under tight deadlines.
This full-time position may be based in one of the following offices and may have hybrid or remote options available:
- California: Concord, Irvine, Los Angeles, Ontario, Sacramento, Salinas, San Diego, Temecula
- Nevada: Las Vegas
- Washington: Seattle
Responsibilities and Duties - Provides technical editing and document management/organization assistance.
- Reviews documents for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, logic, and references.
- Reviews documents for clarity, readability, and consistent editorial style.
- Reviews tables, figures, and other graphics for consistency and clarity.
- Applies working knowledge of various style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style, and learns and applies the Harris & Associates technical editorial style.
- Ensures conformance with project- and client-specific style guidelines and creates project- and client-specific style sheets as necessary.
- Provides editorial guidance and recommendations to authors as needed.
- Formats documents using Microsoft Word font styles and templates.
- Creates and maintains templates for authors that are easy to use and adapt as necessary.
- Coordinates with writing teams to manage editorial workflow, including editing, formatting, PDFing, and project manager and client review rounds.
- Attends project meetings as necessary and assists with document milestone schedules.
- Efficiently manages time to meet deadlines.
- Researches and provides solutions for document content and management/organization issues.
- Learns department processes and procedures to ensure that technical documents follow Harris & Associates quality standards and schedules.
- Contributes to editorial guidelines and resources updates.
- Learns from and applies feedback from editorial peer and writing team quality checks.
- Creates administrative records as requested.
- Assists in the production, quality checks, and distribution of work products (including hard copies) as requested.
Required Qualifications and Skills - BA in English or other writing-intensive field and/or equivalent 5+ years’ experience editing technical documents in the environmental planning and compliance and/or engineering industry.
- Experience with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)/National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation (e.g., environmental impact reports; initial studies/mitigated negative declarations; and biological resources, cultural resources, air quality/greenhouse gas emissions, hydrology/water quality, and/or noise technical reports), other environmental analyses and environmental documents (e.g., climate action and adaptation plans, local hazard mitigation plans, general plans), and supporting materials (figures, tables, appendices).
- Able to manage project editorial schedules and overall workload to meet deadlines, investigate editorial and document management/organization issues, and deliver effective solutions.
- Able to explain issues and solutions to team members and provide accurate work forecasts and status updates.
- Able to teach and learn from team members, maintain a positive attitude under changing demands and deadlines, and coordinate with team members to achieve a common goal.
- Able to work independently with limited guidance.
- Able to quickly self-teach new skills and software, be productive when faced with changing demands and deadlines, and prioritize assignments when working on with multiple projects.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word (specifically Track Changes, Styles, and AutoText/AutoCorrect functions), PowerPoint, and Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills - Experience with PerfectIt, Word macros, Airtable, and Bluebeam Revu.

The salary rate offered for this position is $70k-$90k. Actual pay offered will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
