Division/Department Information

The First Year Seminar Program within the Department of Core Studies is seeking applications for a one-year contract faculty position to teach First Year Seminar to a diverse undergraduate population. All St. John's University students are required to take First Year Seminar, and the program's faculty are responsible for designing and teaching the curriculum for this course. Faculty design their own courses, which are connected to a shared theme (currently New York City) and by a shared set of learning objectives.

Our faculty incorporate high impact practices such as Academic Service-Learning with community partners and experiential learning in the form of three field-based learning excursions with each class throughout the semester. The candidate will join a program committed to inclusive pedagogical practices. The DCS is eager to attract candidates who represent the rich diversity of the students and communities we are proud to serve in the New York Metropolitan area. In addition, we seek candidates who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Responsibilities

The position entails teaching four First Year Seminar courses per semester in person including the designated high-impact practices described above. An active research agenda is suggested but not required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed at minimum an MA in a range of fields related to the study of New York City by the time of appointment and have significant experience teaching introductory (survey) courses. All candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence and show a commitment to early college students. Preferred qualifications include a record of publication related to pedagogy or the field of expertise and evidence of ongoing research production. We are especially interested in candidates whose pedagogies and research embrace inclusive teaching practices and promote student engagement and belonging in the classroom.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000.
