The SWE Developer productivity team is on a mission to provide innovative infrastructure and tools to make engineers more productive and make software easier to create, build and distribute. We believe that streamlining software engineering is an important part of unlocking developer creativity and innovation, and we enjoy when Apple customers see that in the products we ship.
We are seeking an exceptional ML engineer to bring to bear advances in NLP and language models to directly improve the quality and velocity of developing software across Apple. The candidate should be someone with proven mastery of system software development, NLP development, and a rich mix of education and practical experience with a real passion for diving headfirst into exciting problems. As a member of our ML innovation team, you will be moving software development at Apple in new directions, from ideation through execution. If you enjoy working on the cutting edge of NLP and distributed systems, and if you have a strong interest in developer productivity, then we have many exciting problems to work on!
Key Qualifications
- Positive and respectful attitude in a diverse environment.
- 5+ years industry experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Software Engineer, working on building data pipelines, and training and deploying machine learning models in production.
- Strong understanding in ML, deep learning, natural language understanding, distributed systems, reliability, and cloud services.
- Strong hands-on experience in building large scale ML based solutions or in building and scaling distributed systems.
- Ability to efficiently develop, debug and support new technologies in a changing environment.
Description
Our team works on evolving a set of innovative distributed backend services and tools that combine to enable superior developer productivity. You’ll find ways to combine our unique problem domain with established distributed system and cutting edge ML techniques in order to achieve high performance, reliability and long term maintainability. You’ll analyze problem requirements, existing solutions, and available systems and make high-level architectural decisions about how to design the backend, considering both medium- and long-term goals. Once solutions are identified, you will work alongside your team to implement them while developing appropriate testing and operational mechanisms.
In your role as a Senior ML Engineer you will:
- Design new ways to scale the productivity of Apple’s own developers using innovative ML approaches and techniques.
- Mentor and guide the next generation of Apple star engineers.
- Spend a majority of your time working on ML solutions, distributed services engineering, tooling, and contributing to solutions being developed across the organization.
- Collaborate with your team members to help refine problem requirements and work to implement long lasting solutions.
- Work with internal customers, being a team ambassador in all interactions.
- Work with cross-functional engineering teams, identifying dependencies and opportunities with other teams.
- Develop expertise and be given ownership over components critical to Apple’s success.
- Have access to the engineers who create Apple’s full technology, tools, and operating systems stack.

- At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $199,800.00 and $300,200.00, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
