To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Preferred Experience: Minimum 3-5 years experience as a licensed Psychiatrist; Preferred experience working with Active Duty/Veteran populations; Preferred experience working with Interdisciplinary Teams. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. The Mental Health Service is looking for psychiatrists who are value-driven, recovery- and diversity-oriented, and possess energy, compassion, and a pursuit of excellence to join our Acute Medical Inpatient Services Program as a consultative liaison psychiatrist. Consultation-liaison psychiatry, also known as psychosomatic medicine, is an exciting subspecialty of psychiatry that focuses on the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions. Consultation-liaison psychiatry deals with the understanding and advancement of medical science, education, and the provision of healthcare for medically ill patients. The incumbent should have expertise in academic teaching and direct patient care. Psychiatry consultation services are provided to medical inpatients, emergency department patients and other populations as needed. The staff member would be active in teaching medical students, psychiatry residents and other trainees across all mental health disciplines and professions. The position carries the potential of a Clinical Faculty appointment at Augusta University, Medical College of Georgia. The consultative liaison psychiatrist works at the medical-psychiatric/mental health interface at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center - Downtown Division to help with patient care, education/training, research/evaluation and administration. The position may include patient care for the following populations including: 1) Medical/Surgical Inpatient 2) Spinal Cord Inpatient 3) Palliative Care and Hospice 4) ED and/or Urgent Care The consultative liaison psychiatrist advises the medical team on appropriate medications and other treatment strategies, also providing the care team with educational support on diagnosing and managing behavioral health conditions. The models used for care may include: 1) Integrated, Stepped, and Collaborative 2) Behavioral Medicine and/or 3) Health Psychology The consultative liaison psychiatrist works with an interdisciplinary mental health team (Psychiatric NP, Mental Health Social Worker) and also with inter-professional teams, including medical providers, nursing, pharmacy, care manager/coordinator/technician, mental/behavioral health clinicians (social work, psychology, other) and others. The consultative liaison psychiatrist provides supervision to rotating psychiatry residents, fellows and medical students from academic affiliate Augusta University.
