Job description
SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision of a Shareholder, performs a variety of complex, professional accounting tasks to maintain accounting records and prepare financial reports, bookkeeping and taxes for clients of Bell & Company, P.A. May perform some or all of the listed functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Audit:
- Performs 401k audits
- Assist with IRS and state income tax audits
- Prepare financial statement audits
- Perform audit and tax research
Attest & Assurance:
- A primary point of contact for clients to whom A&A services are provided
- Resolves technical issues
- Prepare financial compilations
- Develops procedures
- Bid on prospective A&A jobs
- Trains other Accountants
Billing:
- Maintains accurate time records and descriptions of work performed for client billing
- Review billing worksheets for accuracy. Determine amounts to be billed, written off and WIP
Bookkeeping:
- Review monthly, quarterly, and annual bookkeeping files.
- May perform limited bookkeeping duties for specific clients.
Client Contact:
- Establish a rapport and good communication with clients
- Contact the client for clarity regarding source documents, income, expenses and other pertinent information. Come to a conclusion based on inquiry and take a course of action.
- Meet with clients in person at Bell & Co. offices or may travel to client office to review finished work products, conduct audits and other related services.
- Evaluate client needs and identify opportunities for added services.
- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the client and/or client representative(s).
- Assist Shareholders in the advisement of the client in all areas of provided service.
- Contact clients regarding past due balances; send late notices in a timely manner.
- Receive phone calls and answer any questions a client may have; assist clients with internal accounting software.
Communication:
- Read and respond timely to both internal and client emails.
- Update Shareholders and related coworkers on client account status, services being provided and current or potential issues for resolution.
- Attend company meetings, workgroup meetings, training sessions and other pertinent events.
Review:
- Act as a first or second reviewer on tax returns prepared by other Accountants.
- Act as a first or second reviewer in Financial Statement audits, reviews compilations and individual and business tax projections.
- Assist with Peer Review.
- 1st reviewer on bookkeeping, projections & A&A. If the incumbent is a secondary biller be the 1st reviewer for tax returns.
Taxes:
- Review monthly, quarterly and annual bookkeeping files.
- Prepare more complicated and difficult tax returns: 990, 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 706, 709 and 5500.
- Amend tax returns from prior years.
- Prepare tax projections
- Prepare and review business value calculations
- Research IRS rules and other governances to ensure compliance
- Work with 3rd parties such as banks, investment advisors and county tax collectors to obtain information for tax returns and other projects.
- Prepare lead sheets summarizing tax data on forms of income/deductions – interest, dividends and donations.
- Deliver drafts of returns; answer questions and obtain authorization to file the return.
Training:
- Train and/or assist with the training of new employees and be of assistance to team members.
- Participate in tax updates and other related training classes, workshops and seminars.
- CPAs must participate in continuing education to maintain CPA designation.
Other Pertinent Duties:
- Supervise, assign, initiate, instruct and delegate all types of tax and attest work prepared by Supervisor level and down.
- Seek out and make familiar applicable deadlines specific to clients to ensure timely completion of related forms, returns, payroll processing, etc.
- Maintain contractor license and engagement logs.
- Assist attorneys with reports, exhibits and provide consultation on legal cases.
- Attend and participate in meetings and events that provide opportunities to gain new clients.
- Analyze potential and new client data to determine appropriate service offerings.
- Provide mentorship, motivation, leadership and/or supervision to other accountants and bookkeepers.
- Pursue leadership roles in the community through social and civic activities.
- Maintain relationships with a network of peers.
- Perform various tasks and other duties as assigned by management.
- Be at work as required and on time.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment – with very limited exposure to physical risk. Equipment used: computer, telephone, copier and scanner.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and concentrate for long periods of time. Must be able to work for multiple clients simultaneously. Must be able to work under time pressure; recognize timelines and meet determined deadlines. Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Essential demands include sitting at a desk, working on a computer for long periods of time and using a telephone and computer to communicate with clients and staff. May experience stress due to the need to meet deadlines.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED The incumbent must have:
- CPA in good standing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- A minimum of 7 years of practical experience is required.
- Ability to analyze financial data and draw appropriate conclusions.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, and listening skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Ability to delegate and supervise accountants in the performance of their duties.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
- Understanding of and the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles.
- Ability to correctly prepare tax reports.
- Ability to convey knowledge to other accountants to increase their understanding and knowledge base.
- Understanding of a broad range of accounting issues including those involving higher levels of judgement such as: priority for income taxes, revenue recognition, subsequent events, contingencies and industry-specific procedures.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, and accounting software, Quickbooks and Ultratax preferred.
