ApexHire is currently working with a client in the Concord, CA area who is looking to add an Area Construction Manager to their team that has experience with road and surface initiatives encompassing paving, sanitary, storm, and water-related projects. This is a full-time benefited opportunity with a salary range of $150k - $220k/yr. In addition, my client is offering an excellent benefit package including health, dental and vision. 100% of employee and 75% of dependent premiums are paid by employer. Also offering Life Insurance, a 401K Plan with 5% Company match, vacation and sick leave.
Summary
The Area Manager is accountable for ensuring the secure coordination and strategic planning of multiple projects or a single mega project site, with the objective of attaining optimal economic and schedule outcomes.
In This Role, You Will
- Supervises multiple types of project work on a mega project or over multiple projects. Supports project managers, area superintendents, field engineering, and estimating to ensure Company standards are being followed and project compliance with contract drawings and specifications.
- Collaborates with company leadership in each project to ensure proper staffing and technical expertise are allocated to achieve success.
- Participates in monthly financial reviews of each project, as well as periodic strategy reviews, leads project teams in safety, quality, cost control, cash management, scheduling, and other performance metrics.
- Supports the estimating team and company leadership in selection of project pursuits considering the competitive landscape and company strengths.
- Supports the estimating team, advises on technical and commercial aspects of contracts, and actively participates in bid reviews and risk analysis sessions.
- Through market knowledge and industry contacts, supports staffing efforts on new projects.
- Supports the project teams by coordinating Company support through active and regular engagement with various corporate departments including safety, accounting, project controls, equipment, estimating, and human resources.
- Understands the Companys Safety Policies and actively participates in all aspects of the Company safety program.
- Enforces Company and project safety plans on all projects to ensure Company and sub-contractor safety compliance and performance.
- Ensures quality is built into all aspects of each project and process ensures zero re-work.
- Evaluates project activities to determine compliance with government regulatory agencies and coordinate with agencies for permit requirements and environmental regulations.
- Builds a strong relationship with each project Owner and maintains a positive relationship through partnering and regular communication.
- Develops a robust understanding of each contract. Ensures notices, change orders, disputes, and claims are actively managed.
- Reviews and monitors each project schedule monthly and ensures compliance with Company and contract schedule requirements.
- Reviews and ensures project activities are planned before work has started and quantities, cost, and budgets for each activity are tracked to ensure profitability.
- Reviews daily, weekly, monthly cost results and always takes actions to reduce costs.
- Meets bi-monthly with project managers to assess costs, revenues, extra work reports and projections as project progresses.
- Travels to job sites and Company offices when necessary.
- Maintains knowledge of Company values and strategic plan.
- Performs performance reviews for direct reports consistent with BCPG standards.
- Develops career opportunities or corrective action plans if needed.
- Cultivates and provides opportunities for rising talent within BCPG
- Actively participates in developing employee recruiting and retention best practices.
- Directly contributes to recruiting and retention activities when relevant.
- Perform additional assignments per management's directions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of heavy civil project cycle (design, construction, operations).
- Advanced knowledge of construction site equipment operation and maintenance requirements.
- Business and financial risk management experience required.
- Experience overseeing multiple projects or a single mega project.
- Valid Drivers License required.
- Expert knowledge of complex construction means and methods.
- Proven knowledge and ability to manage claims process and negotiate with Owner regarding project
issues. - Proven skill and ability to lead multiple teams from different functions towards a common goal.
- Proven ability to handle complex construction projects using strong organization and multi-tasking
skills. - Proven ability to manage difficult schedules and project demands while maintaining strict adherence to
project safety program. - Strong conflict management skills.
- Strong, proven leadership skills.
- Ability to identify top talent and implement growth opportunities and trainings to mentor and build
internal team. - Advanced knowledge of construction site safety protocols and proven ability to enforce project safety
programs. - Knowledge and understanding of local union or prevailing wage rules.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret standards and contract specific plans and specifications.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics, and fundamentals
geometry. - Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical
situations. - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Education & Experience
- Bachelors Degree as well as relevant certifications (PE, DBIA, LEED AP, Envision, etc.) are a plus.
- 15+ years experience in heavy civil construction with expanding responsibility.
- 10+ years experience managing construction teams required.
- Experience running Caltrans projects preferred.
