Under the general supervision of the Fire Lieutenant, performs work in the response of fire, medical emergency or public assistance as necessary to protect life and property. Can expect to operate and maintain fire vehicles, medical units, telemetry systems and all other fire fighting and emergency medical equipment. Can also expect to participate in fire prevention activities and training activities of all related fields. Performs station and vehicle maintenance and other duties as required. Work in this position normally does not involve direct supervision of subordinates; however, Firefighter may at times be required to act in a supervisory capacity in the absence of a superior officer. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires including rescue, entry, ventilation and salvage.

Drives assigned fire vehicles to the scene of emergencies.

Operates pumping engines to supply regulated amounts of water pressure.

May operate an aerial ladder.

After fire or training activities, maintains equipment to return it to readiness for future calls.

Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and associated equipment.

Maintains fire station and grounds.

May perform duties of a paramedic.

Responds to requests for emergency medical assistance.

Operates medical telemetry and patient monitoring equipment.

Drives medic unit.

Assists in making residential, commercial and industrial inspections to discover and eliminate potential fire hazards.

Educates the public on fire prevention and being prepared for fire suppression tactics.

May teach in-service training.

Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.

Assists in hydrant inspections.

Operates departmental radio communications.

Receives alarms and notifies appropriate personnel.

Summons on-call personnel.

Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the Fire Department property.

Cleans and washes walls and floors, makes minor repairs, paints and otherwise maintains quarters.

Typical Qualifications


High School diploma or equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Drivers License. Both Ohio Certified Paramedic and Ohio Certified Level II Firefighter credentials are mandatory at time of application.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of physics and mechanics.

Ability to learn technical fire fighting principles, and techniques and principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression.

Ability to learn and apply EMT and paramedic training.

Ability to learn and operate medical telemetry equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees and the public.

Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports.

Health Insurance offered is a high deductible health plan (HDHP) and health savings account (HSA). Monthly premiums are paid by employees at 21%. Deductibles are $2000/$4000 (Single/Family). The City funds 75% of the deductible after successful probationary period expiration as approved by the annual budget.

Dental Insurance offered through Delta Dental (employee pays 10% of monthly premium).


Vision Insurance is offered through EyeMed (employee pays 10% of monthly premium).


AFSCME employees follow their bargining unit agreement for dental, vision, hearing and life.


Term Life Insurance is paid by the employer.

Employees and Employer contribute to Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) or Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund dependent on position.

Vacation/Sick Leave accrual is more than adequate.

Personal Leave/Injury Leave/Funeral Leave/Sick Leave is provided based on Union or Non-Union group.
