Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is NOT a SW Testing Position.
The Primary Role of the Test Engineer III is to design and conduct, with Technicians as required, engineering tests during new product development to verify the performance, durability and reliability of concept, prototype, and zero series (pre-production) machines.
Test Engineers also develop test procedures; design, construct and install test fixtures and instrumentation; collect and manage test data, write test reports and maintain test report files related to new product development and competitive machine analysis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Concept and Prototype Machine Builds:
- For concept and prototype machine assembly that occurs in the Test and Validation department:
- Gather parts and assemblies from production, engineering, or prototype build stock and stage
- Coordinate people from Product Design, Manufacturing, and Test & Validation that will participate in the build.
- Maintain discrepancy list and call attention to deviations or variations not anticipated during machine build.
2. For concept and prototype machine assembly that occurs in the manufacturing:
Machine Test and Validation
- Consolidate test requirements into efficient test procedures for repetitive tests.
- Maintain file of test reports.
- Design and develop test fixtures, data acquisition systems, and instrumentation for in-house testing
- Make recommendations for instrumentation, data management system, test equipment, and related capital expenses to meet business needs.
- Set up mechanical, hydraulic and/or electrical testing devices and apparatus in accordance with engineering specifications.
- Observe the operation of components during testing and detect failures.
- Compile, organize, and prepare reports of test data for evaluation.
- Conduct testing of products including competitive machines.
- Set-up and conduct machine field endurance testing during product development as well as long-term post-development testing.
- Ownership and accountability for use and update of prototype machines
Other
- Assist manager to achieve department goals.
- Test and data analysis:
- Identify design improvement opportunities.
- Determine the probable cause of malfunctions or failures.
- Make constructive recommendations as to product performance, malfunctions, failures or breakdowns.
Safety:
Performs all job functions is a safe manner and maintains safety awareness.
Reports known accidents, injuries and unsafe practices and/or conditions to manager.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Qualifications: Additional years of experience or education may be substituted for each other as determined by Human Resources.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) preferred
- Can substitute STEM degree with other Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years appropriate mechanical/technical experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Travel required-up to 5% (Domestic and Global).
- Passport required
Experience: Test Engineer III - 7 to 10+ years' Experience - Valid Drivers License
- Preferred skills:
- Product testing knowledge and with hands-on experience.
- Data acquisition equipment with emphasis on temperature, pressure, flow, stress/strain, and vibration and noise measurements.
- Selection and installation of test instrumentation.
- Basic gas and diesel engine knowledge.
- Basic hydraulics.
- Basic electrical wiring.
- Ability to interpret and verbalize results of the data being acquired.
- Basic PC skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND/OR WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to use a keyboard, calculator, and telephone. Frequent sitting, talking, hearing, and occasionally stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift (50 lbs.), and an ability to adjust vision for close vision work. 100% of time spent in manufacturing/test environment around industrial equipment.
