Job description

ACT-UAW Local 7902
the union for NYU adjuncts and New School part-time faculty,
student workers, and health service employees

Database Administrator

Based in New York City, NY
(remote work possible)

Title: Database Administrator
Location: New York, NY (remote work possible)
Status: Part-Time, 13 hours/week
Duration: 1-year renewable contract

ACT-UAW Local 7902, the union for NYU adjuncts and New School part-time faculty, student workers, and health service employees, is seeking a Database Administrator to join our team. Formed in 2002, our union has been at the forefront of organizing contingent instructors and student workers in higher ed. We are seeking to hire a Database Administrator to maintain and expand a newly developed database system, which will undergird the Local’s efforts to win fair working conditions, build a more equitable higher education system, and fight for social justice in our community and beyond.

ACT-UAW 7902 recently partnered with another UAW Local to develop its own instance of a custom software-driven data system to keep track of information needed for organizing and contract enforcement. This system involves multiple code bases , including full stack web applications, data engineering workflows, and downstream surfacing of data in services like Google Sheets. This system is actively developed and changes on a near-weekly basis to support organizing with existing and new tools.

The system will continue to be improved and expanded by the partner local, but as it grows and evolves, Local 7902 requires a Developer to help contribute to developing the system’s codebase, adapt our local instance to new versions and deal with breaking changes, manage deployment pipelines, and maintain and develop the parts of our local instance that require complex knowledge, like localized applications and complex systems of database views.

As this system is complex and has growing needs, a major part of this position will include learning new technologies and data team needs, particularly through self-directed learning. ACT-UAW Local 7902 is seeking applicants who are excited to work together with the team to make plans to learn new tools and frameworks and put those skills to practical use.
