As a District Engineer River Mechanics , you will perform design of hydraulic models, stormwater management BMPs, erosion and sediment control phasing, and other drainage elements impacting right of way for the development of roadway and bridge construction plans. Coordinate and review the hydrologic and hydraulic design for roadway, bridges, and other major drainage facilities prepared by others. Review projects with a specific focus and communicate findings with stakeholders. Oversee hydraulics related issues complying with applicable processes, schedules, budgets, design criteria, standards and specifications. Serve as the District River Mechanic responsible for satisfying FEMA and county floodplain management requirements.

Core Responsibilities for job & position

Perform River Mechanic Design:

Perform Stormwater Management & Hydraulic Design: Develop stormwater management, hydraulic design, and erosion and sediment control phasing for a wide range of transportation projects. Complete work tasks using hydraulic software and Microsoft Office programs. Manage hydraulic design tasks to meet project schedules and budget. Support the construction and maintenance divisions with requests for information and drainage studies. Attend field reviews and project milestone meetings. Assist the District Hydraulic Engineer in meeting all drainage needs and requirements within the District.

Minimum Qualifications

• Engineering experience in peak discharge hydrology, hydraulic analysis, open channel flow and storm sewer systems.

• Experience developing runoff values using appropriate hydrology, as well as hydraulics of bridged waterways, bridge scour analysis and flood routing.

• Experience in FEMA floodplain compliance and applicable regulations.

• Progressively responsible engineering experience applying civil engineering principles related to hydraulic and roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

• Valid Professional Engineer's license in VA or with reciprocity to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

• Progressively responsible engineering experience applying drainage policies and design procedures.

• Progressively responsible engineering experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering design and analysis software.

• Experience communicating effectively, orally and in writing.

Additional Considerations

• Familiarity with VDOT's Drainage Manual, policies and procedures.

• Experience in hydraulic and hydraulic analysis of major structures using appropriate computer technology.

• Erosion and Sediment Control Program Administrator Inspector or Plan Reviewer Certification.
