Senior Visual Design Manager - College of Applied Health Sciences College of Applied Health Sciences The College of Applied Health Sciences is searching for a Senior Graphic Design Manager to join the growing marketing and communications team. The Senior Graphic Design Manager will be a linchpin for AHS' marketing and communications team, imagining and creating visually compelling, distinctive, and on-brand marketing and communications materials conveying AHS' rich history, its academic and research excellence, and its continued influence and impact on our campus and beyond.
Projects and duties for the this position include, but are not limited to: Building on visual identity for the College of AHS while adhering to the University of Illinois' current brand standards and accessibility requirements; supervising and assigning work to graphic design staff, including student interns and freelancers; producing graphics for digital, print, social media, and other outlets; producing graphics for events and merchandise; producing suites of templates, newsletter skins, and other materials for repeat use by college departments and units; creating college-specific illustrations and iconography, and much more. This position will also work with the assistant dean to design, regularly review, and update the college's brand identity, working with the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing on campus when necessary to maintain adherence to campus brand standards.
The ideal candidate is extremely collaborative, has considerable experience holistically envisioning and executing graphic design and branding for a college or unit, and will possess a sharp, modern graphic design sensibility with skills to match. They are able to work quickly and efficiently, can manage multiple projects effectively, and are solutions-oriented. In short, our ideal teammate is a confident designer who is comfortable working with others to build something great within a respected and storied college.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Design and Production
- Working as part of the College of AHS' marketing team, design and implement creative marketing and communications campaigns and strategies for a broad range of audiences, including students, faculty, staff, the campus community, and the community-at-large
- Provide overall leadership on the development and design of marketing collateral for the college
- Manage production of/produce all design assignments/marketing materials from conception to completion, ensuring work is produced on time, to budget, and to a high standard. Projects could include but are not limited to: various print collateral, boutique print publications, analog and digital signage, print mailings, digital advertising campaigns, impact reports, and more
- Ensure all design work meets AHS and University of Illinois branding guidelines
- Consult with internal partners, including academic departments and other units, as needed to develop and produce marketing and communications pieces
- Work with area printers, merchandisers, and other vendors regarding format and print processes to ensure materials meet specifications and standards
- Manage the front end design and branding of the forthcoming new college and departmental websites, and participating regularly in web team meetings
Student and other staff supervision
- Work with assistant dean to identify and hire student design talent for student worker/intern pool
- Manage student designers, freelancers, extra help, and others to successfully assign, manage, and supervise graphic design projects for delivery to AHS' departments and units
Service and other duties
- Represent the college team in campus level meetings and committees
- Ensure that graphic design and brand efforts are aligned with college and campus goals to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Perform other duties as needed to further the goals of the college
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
- Five years of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
- Demonstrated experience with graphic design and digital marketing in a university setting.
- Experience supervising and training students.
- Experience working with marketing teams and website content management.
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Advertising, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in project coordination and creating brand image for companies, organizations, or departments within a large public university setting.
- Advanced experience in print production with developed typography skills
- Advanced experience designing accessible print and digital pieces
- Photography/videography skills, including photo editing
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Required: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects of varying degrees of difficulty
Demonstrably strong written and oral communication skills
Very strong interpersonal/customer service skills
Strong organizational skills, including file management, recordkeeping, and overall project management
Creativity, generativity, vision, and a sense of humor are very valued on this team
Strong/expert proficiency with Microsoft Suite
Strong/expert proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
Preferred: Strong/expert experience with Google Suite, ClickUp, Microsoft Teams, Box, Miro, Figma, Airtable, and/or other project management/communications tools
Strong experience with Photoshelter, Canto, or other asset management tools
Strong aesthetic judgment
Working Conditions Work will be done in a variety of spaces, including traditional office space and off-site space, including at events. Night and weekend hours are occasionally required. Position involves moving upwards of 50 pounds unaided or with the assistance of others. This position is hybrid, with 2 days/week required onsite.
Salary and Appointment Information This position is a full-time Civil Service Marketing Associate position appointed on a twelve (12) month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The minimum salary for this position is $63,000 with the final salary offer determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
