Job description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs skilled electrical repairs and preventive maintenance duties in an industrial plant environment or water/water reclamation field with multiple critical processes. Installs, troubleshoots and repairs new and existing controls and instrumentation as needed to upgrade and update equipment. Tests motors, generators, lighting and power distribution systems. Troubleshoots and repairs variable frequency drives and other motor controls. May serve as a team lead for staff assigned to assist them, helping them to become familiarized with equipment, tools, work procedures, and ensure safety procedures are followed. Work is performed under the general direction of the Plant Maintenance Supervisor. Performance is reviewed through inspection, reports, meetings and results achieved.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs skilled electrical work which involves maintenance and troubleshooting of Utilities lift stations, water/reclaimed water plants and facilities.
- Installs, troubleshoots and repairs low and medium voltage systems up to 480 volts with limited supervision.
- Calibrates and maintains controls and process instruments and other instruments using a 4-20ma control signal.
- Performs troubleshooting and maintenance for all levels of infrastructure in water/water reclamation plants and lift station operation; working with mechanical and electrical equipment such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), fuses, breakers and contactors.
- Troubleshoots control systems equipped with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) using ladder logic diagrams and electrical schematics. Uses technical manuals and prints to isolate and repair control systems.
- Uses multimeter instruments to identify voltage and ensures the safety of the work location while performing repairs.
- Works in enclosed spaces, adjacent to electrical equipment while installing or repairing chase pipes for wiring additional power or communication sources.
- Works with hand tools, climbs ladders and/or opens working pull boxes to run various types of cables.
- Interprets and understands Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) / PLC logic which involves reading and understanding data trends used in troubleshooting equipment.
- Utilizes a work order management system to capture and record electrical failures, views historical data, report time and resources expended to complete work orders.
- Assists other staff with low voltage wiring while installing lights, switches and other low voltage equipment required for the maintenance of a safe working area or restoration of communications systems.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, overtime, weekends, nights, and holidays, as required.
- Provide review and input of electrical related projects, schematics, plans and drawings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Journey level electrical experience in industrial motor controls, solid state soft starters and variable frequency drives, including PLC programming knowledge, and experience maintaining electronic instruments in accordance with technical specifications, experience with test meters for measuring current, voltage and resistance; experience in working with wiring schematics and prints to troubleshoot equipment and accomplish repairs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
- State certified or State registered with Orange County as a Journeyman Electrician, or six (6) years of training and graduation from a vocational school or program, or six (6) years of technical electrical work experience in an industrial setting.
- Must possess experience in working with wiring schematics and blueprints to troubleshoot equipment and accomplish repairs.
- Based on area of assignment, must have the ability to perform in confined spaces and use safety equipment including respirator equipment per City of Apopka requirements.
- Must possess a State of Florida Class (E) Driver's License.
PREFERENCES
- State certified or State registered with Orange County as a Journeyman Electrician.
- Experience in water and wastewater operations and processes and knowledge of related trades.
- Medium voltage electrical work experience.
- Familiarity with local Orange County electrical codes.
EQUIPMENT USED
Communication equipment, (ie, radio, telephone) computers, copy machine, multi-line phone system, fax machine, photo, video and audio hardware, various hand tools and various motor vehicles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, standing, bending, and working on a computer.
JOB LOCATION
All City owned buildings, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City's participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment.
