Job description

OVERVIEW

This position provides direct therapeutic treatment services to mentally ill and/or emotionally disabled inmates of the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Work entails diagnosis, treatment planning, education, problem solving and supportive counseling and case manage­ment to restore competency of inmates with symptoms of serious mental illness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conducts intake interviews, obtains data and develops diagnosis and treatment plans.
  2. Interviews individuals and provides problem solving and supportive therapy.
  3. Conducts group, individual and family therapy sessions.
  4. Assesses need to psychiatric services and facilitates referral, as needed.
  5. Prepares lesson plans and training materials for education­al/treatment programming.
  6. Performs educational and treatment services intended to restore competency to inmates found incompetent to stand trial.
  7. Prepares correspondence, progress notes and other records on individual progress, keeping courts, attorneys and other interested parties informed as appropriate.
  8. Compiles and analyzes data regarding contacts and treatment progress to funding sources, as required.
  9. Inputs psychological data to agency staff for individual place­ments, care and treatment.
  10. Consults with agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs; makes referrals, and provides and coordinates individual case management services.
  11. Provides expert testimony in court and legal proceedings.
  12. Provides crisis intervention and facilitates transfer to more intensive services, as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of the mentally ill population and related individual, group and family therapy and counseling techniques and practices; thorough knowledge of individual management guidelines for Virginia; good knowledge of office management practices; ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with private and public agency personnel; ability to function calmly in stressful situations; ability to communicate effective­ly, orally and in writing; ability to maintain individual records.

TYPICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Master's Degree in the Behavioral Sciences with professional experience in direct therapy to the mentally ill, or combination of education and experience to produce required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid VA driver's license. VA license eligible as LCSW, LPC, or LCP.
