Job description
Key Responsibilities
- Create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another through student-centered instruction, collaboration, and authentic assessment.
- Design and implement a science curriculum that aligns with state and Next-Generation Science Standards.
- Teach science concepts clearly and engagingly, using hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and interactive activities to enhance student understanding and retention.
- Have enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues across grades and disciplines.
- Create and maintain a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and respect among students.
- Meet students where they are as learners by differentiating curriculum and instruction.
- Assess student learning through various methods, provide constructive feedback, and adapt instructional strategies to meet students' needs.
- Stay current with educational research and best practices in science education through ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Communicate with parents about students' progress and involve the community in science-related projects and activities.
- Work closely with other teachers and staff to integrate science with other subjects and contribute to the school's educational mission.
- Possess a growth mindset when engaging with relevant and mission-driven professional learning.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Science Education, or a related field.
- State teaching certification with an endorsement in elementary education or science is helpful but optional.
- Previous teaching experience in elementary education or a related field is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of science content and pedagogy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to engage young students in learning and foster a positive classroom environment.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the philosophy of progressive education.
- Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging in an elementary/middle school.
Responsibilities at FSS
- Performing various duties, including recess coverage, lunch duty, and creating curricular displays
- Document curriculum as it evolves throughout the year
- Narrative report writing and timely communication with parents
- Attending weekly staff meetings
- Actively participate in admissions programming as needed
- and other duties as assigned
