General Function:
School Nurses ensure comprehensive delivery of health services to students. Provides age appropriate, culturally, and ethnically sensitive care in a safe environment; educate parents and staff about healthy practices and treatment conditions, assures and coordinates continuity of care among several settings and care givers; monitors and manage medical information in a timely manner; communicates effectively in school and community settings with students, staff, parents, and care providers.



Education/Training/Experience:
(Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)

Minimum: Successful completion and graduation from a Registered Nurse program, a bachelor's degree in nursing or in a related field from a regionally accredited college or university or from an institution accredited by the national league of nursing; and a minimum of two (2) years experience in school nursing community health or public health. Current valid New Mexico registered nurse license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or license from another state based on current compact state license according to New Mexico nursing board rule, 16.12.2 NMAC. Certified as a school nurse by the Public Education Department.

Preferred: Bilingual: English-Spanish.



Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of nursing process and theory, standard nursing practices and procedures, immunization requirements, communicable disease prevention and control, HIPAA/ FERPA regulations, screening methods related to vision, hearing and dental health, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Knowledge of SFPS district policies and procedures as they apply to health services, Special Education process (IEP and 504), classroom-teaching methods. Knowledge of state and federal guidelines that effect student access to health care. Use of audiometer, otoscope, electronic sphygmomanometer, electronic thermometer, computerized record keeping, vision screening equipment, and other medical equipment necessary for the individual student. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with students, families, staff, community agencies and health care providers. Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills. Interpersonal skills with diverse populations both in person and on the telephone. Ability to meet deadlines and submit reports in a timely manner. Computer skills for accessing and entering Student Health Information and the School Health Manual.



Essential Job Functions :
Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  1. Implements health policies and procedures of the local district and state health agencies.
  2. Identifies health problems through screening procedures, assessment and evaluation of the student.
  3. Makes appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screening procedures.
  4. Makes home visits when need arises.
  5. Maintains student health and immunization records and appropriate follow-up.
  6. Provides emergency care and first aid for all students and employees.
  7. Authorizes exclusion and-readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  8. Serves as a consultant and resource person to staff, parents and students in identifying community resources.
  9. Advises teachers and consults with parents on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health concerns
  10. Serves on and or attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and curriculum.
  11. Serves on SST, IEP and 504 meetings when the student has a health condition that effects his/her ability to learn.
  12. Participates in in-service training programs, workshops, and continuing education to maintain professional status
  13. Serves as a consultant in matters of school health, safety, health education, and sanitary conditions.
  14. Assists principal and Lead Nurse in performance of any other health related assignments.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  16. Must be available to respond to emergencies at other Santa Fe Public Schools campuses.
  17. Assists in supervising, training, and delegating assignments, medication administration, and procedures to Health Assistants.
  18. Manages and oversees the implementation of the District medication policy.
  19. Develops and implements individual health care plans.
  20. Reviews, administers, and documents immunizations as deemed appropriate for student health. Is available for immunization clinics.
  21. Attends all mandatory in-services.
  22. Participates in the ongoing operation of School based health centers and acts as a leader when appropriate.
  23. Collaborates with local schools of nursing.
Additional Duties:
  1. Collects and assesses data, which involves the student, family, school staff, and community. The priority of data collection is determined by the nursing diagnosis and the student's immediate condition and/or needs. Screens individual and school population. Reviews and develops immunization health records. Identifies students with special needs. Identifies communicable and infectious diseases. Documents relative data and retrieves as needed. Performs home visits as needed and deemed appropriate per request by Principal.
  2. Analyzes the assessed data in determining the nursing diagnoses. Maintains an information management system that includes current and cumulative health records on all students. Maintains student emergency records. Provides current nursing literature resources for use in formulating nursing diagnoses from the data.
  3. Identifies outcomes of the individual from the nursing diagnoses. The outcomes are formulated with the input from the student, family, school staff and providers. The outcome is culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable. Makes appropriate referrals to the interdisciplinary school team and to community providers. Acts as a medical resource and consultant in the school setting. Utilizes medical expertise in the community as needed.
  4. Initiates a plan of care, which is developed in compliance with local, state and federal regulations as well as providing for the continuity of care for the individual. The school nurse will follow the current standards of school nurse practice in formulating the plan of care. Provides special need students with IEP, 504 and Individual Healthcare plans (IHP). Develops and implements school health programs with staff and community. Plans and promotes age appropriate health education through classroom instruction. Develops and updates classroom health curriculum utilizing an integrated approach. Participates in in service training programs, workshops and continuing education to maintain professional status in accordance with the current standards of school nurse practice and the New Mexico Board of Nursing.
  5. Implements the interventions identified in the plan of care. Administers medications and treatments prescribed by the student's primary care provider (prescription medications) or with permission by parents for (non-prescription) medications. Provides emergency care and first aid for all students and employees. Makes emergency and non-emergency referrals to community health care providers as necessary. Teaches related health skills in disease prevention. Fosters optimal mental health for students and staff. Provides a healthy, safe and nurturing environment. Implements policies and procedures regarding communicable diseases, i.e. exclusions and readmissions. Communicates effectively with the student, family, school staff, community, and other providers regarding student care. Employs counseling techniques and crisis intervention strategies for individuals and groups. Within the guidelines of the Board of Nursing, delegates responsibilities for the performance of an activity from one individual to another through supervision, education and training.
  6. Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions as outlined in the plan of care. Evaluates expected outcomes through student progress, observation, examination, and positive responses. Collaborates with student, family, staff, and community to gain feedback regarding the effectiveness of the plan of care and intervention.
Salary Range and Benefits:
$60,000 to $70,000+ Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees that work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

New Mexico School Health Manual (Department of Health), Quality Nursing Interventions in the School Setting: Procedures, Models, and Guidelines (NASN, Hootman). SPFS Board Policies and the Campus Safe School Plan. Standard office equipment and software platforms such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Google Suite. Telephone, fax, copier, computer, calculator.



Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Regularly required to stand and move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Uses hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work and travel may be required.



Environmental Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
