THE DEPARTMENT: Male Success Initiatives (MSI) stands with men of color of all races, creeds, sexual orientations, abilities, and other intersectional identities at Cal Poly Pomona. Through holistic and culturally relevant programming, cross-campus and interdepartmental support networks, and innovative services, we strive to close the gaps of retention and graduation rates among men of color at CPP.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Administrative and Program Coordination
- Provide leadership in developing, implementing and coordinating programs and services within Male Success Initiatives (MSI).
- Provide leadership to MSI Coordinator on operations, goal setting, implementation of programs and services, and give input to the Associate Director of MSI on coordinator's performance and evaluations.
- Work closely with the Student Equity & Belonging cluster, Division of Student Affairs as well as alumni, university and community partners to design co-curricular programming in the areas of academics, mentoring, leadership development, internship and career exploration, undergraduate research, gender and racial identity development, and others.
- Develop and administer the Black male Asian and Pacific Islander and South West Asian and North African programming under the MSI portfolio.
- Coordinate programming for students who self-identify as men of color, specifically Asian and Pacific Islander and South West Asian and North African, Black and Latino/x men that promote a sense of belonging and bonding as well as develop a strong sense of advocacy around student persistence, retention and graduation.
- Establish relationships with campus departments, faculty and students who support the work of MSI.
- Hire, train and supervise graduate assistant(s), peer mentors and undergraduate student assistants. Develop, coordinate and design content for web page and social media outlets.
- Support student crises, counsel and advise students on concerns related to interpersonal issues, academic concerns, career interests, and identity development. Refer students to appropriate services for additional guidance, support, or intervention.
- Develop knowledge and interpretation of State, University, Division and departmental policies and procedures and the impact on programming and services.
- Serve as a contributing member of the Student Equity & Belonging cluster and campus-wide committees, programs and initiatives that align with the mission and goals of MSI.
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings, retreats, and trainings for the Student Equity & Belonging cluster, and for the Division of Student Affairs and University as assigned.
- Engage in professional organizations that align with the Senior Coordinator's position.
- Benchmark best practices for Male Success Initiatives nationally.
- Investigate and complete grant proposals, funding applications, and other alternative funding sources within the University and the surrounding community.
- Other projects, initiatives and duties assigned by the Associate Director of MSI.
Student Success Coaching
- Build relationships with students quickly to proactively work to improve student experience, engagement with coaching, and success.
- Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative coaching sessions.
- Coach students on developing a plan to achieve their academic and career goals by assessing values/goals, needs and obstacles. Contact and schedule coaching sessions with students, as needed.
- Maintain accurate student information in contact management system(s). Manage confidential information and provide accurate, direct feedback to management to foster continuous improvement of the student experience. Project, assess and report on student likelihood to retain.
- Progress through coaching training program at expected pace in order to grow and learn as a coaching professional. Attend regular project team meetings. Contribute as both an individual coach and a team member in order to further the university's mission. Perform related duties as requested.
Training & Assessment
- Coordinate the scheduling, design, and delivery of MSI training and awareness presentations for the campus community.
- Network with campus departments to conduct outreach programs to inform the campus community on trends and issues related to male success and identity development.
- Review and analyze student utilization of MSI programs.
Fiscal Responsibilities
- Work closely with Associate Director of MSI and Senior Director of Cultural & Identity Initiatives to review budget projections and expenses including State, Foundation and grant funding.
- Advise MSI Associate Director and Senior Director of Cultural & Identity Initiatives on processes and allocations.
- Work collaboratively with Divisional Analyst for fiscal monitoring and processes.
- Effectively reconcile monthly procurement card statements.
- Support fundraising opportunities for MSI in collaboration with University Advancement.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
- A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: - Masters Degree in Education, Sociology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or a related field.
- Experience coordinating retention initiatives and strategies.
- Experience with fund development.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and diversity. Knowledge or and/or experience working with diverse groups of students and professionals, and men of color, specifically Asian and Pacific Islanders, South West Asian and North African, Black and Latino/x men.

The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5,732 and maximum $8,176 per month.
