Penn National Insurance has a great opportunity to join our team as a Home Office Surety and Fidelity Underwriter. Preferred location for this position is hybrid within our Home Office in Harrisburg, PA, however, remote candidates will be considered. We can only consider candidates from the following states at this time: Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin.
The Home Office Surety & Fidelity Underwriter will review Surety and Fidelity new business, renewals, and endorsements under authority granted by the Vice President - Surety & Fidelity, or in conjunction with authority granted to Territory Managers by the Vice President - Surety & Fidelity.
This position utilizes underwriting knowledge and good judgment to determine company acceptability of accounts and to evaluate company risk tolerance based on underwriting guidelines and historical company underwriting appetite.
Scope includes any or all lines of business in the Surety & Fidelity Department at the specific request and as assigned by the Vice President, Surety & Fidelity. The position will work closely with other HO Underwriters and with the Territory Managers as requested by Vice President, Surety & Fidelity.
COMPETENCIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE HOME OFFICE SURETY AND FIDELITY UNDERWRITER
Business Acumen
- Review new business, renewals, and endorsements to determine acceptability using established company guidelines.
- Keep abreast of current industry developments, losses and rate trends including the development of new products and opportunities.
- May assist in the training of Surety Program Specialists and other HO Underwriters.
Negotiation
- Communicate with agents and other department personnel regarding risk acceptability, incomplete information, rating and premium processing, etc.
Results Oriented
- Provide feedback to VP-Surety & Fidelity and designated Territory Managers on quality of submissions and interactions with agency personnel.
- Visit agencies with the VP-Surety & Fidelity and designated Territory Managers to discuss underwriting matters, assist in the development of new business and to strengthen agency relations.
- May review agency performance based on production results, loss ratio results, and other measures and manage the results as part of the underwriting team.
Time & Priority Management
- Assist VP-Surety & Fidelity and designated Territory Managers with bond requests, file maintenance, and premium processing tasks.
- Assist VP-Surety & Fidelity and designated Territory Managers with Financial Management System upkeep and related portfolio management duties.
- May participate in agent educational meetings.
Decision Making
- Maintain individual underwriting authority for smaller, less complex accounts.

- This position reports to the VP-Surety & Fidelity

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE HOME OFFICE SURETY AND FIDELITY UNDERWRITER
Education/Credentials
- 4-year degree preferred; or significant, relevant Surety and Fidelity underwriting experience
Experience
- 3 to 5 years in a relevant underwriting position or 2-4 years in a specific Surety underwriting position
Technical/Professional Knowledge
- Good working knowledge of underwriting and rating of risks
- Good working knowledge of company underwriting standards and philosophy
- Good working knowledge of all Surety & Fidelity coverages
- Good math aptitude
- Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills Good PC skills, with an emphasis on Microsoft Office Suite
