Position Function/Nature of Work:
Performs a variety of supervisory and technical work in the supervision and administration of fire suppression, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention activities. In the absence of the Fire Captain or Fire Chief, shall assume the authority required for department operations. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Captain.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is performed primarily in office, vehicle, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings, and loud at an emergency scene.

- Assists in the Coordination of the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Determines methods of fire suppression; supervises laying of hose lines, directing of water streams, pressures of streams, placing of ladders, and ventilation of buildings, rescuing of persons, and placing of salvage covers.
- Supervises maintenance of departmental equipment, supplies and facilities. Instructs and drills firefighters in use of tools, raising of ladders, and rescue and salvage work, etc.
- Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County and City laws and ordinances.
- Responds to alarms received and directs routes to be taken; directs work of firefighters pending arrival of the Captain or Fire Chief; supervises the laying of hose lines, placing of ladders, direction of water streams, and ventilation of buildings, rescuing persons, and placement of salvage covers.
- Responds to fire alarms as needed; assumes command in the absence of the Fire Captain or the Fire Chief.
- Participates in the operation of departmental in‑service training activities.
- Prepares a variety of reports and records including personnel records, and requisitions.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of the practices, techniques, training methods, equipment, and apparatus related to modern firefighting and fire prevention.
- Knowledge of area geography and the physical and the physical layout of the City.
- Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through State E.M.T. certification.
- Ability to train and lead personnel effectively and maintain discipline.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and accurately and determine the proper action to be taken.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare clear reports.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with associates.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must have served as a firefighter for at least two years.
- Must meet or exceed any previous position requirements.
- Must be actively pursuing a higher education withing the fire service.
- Other courses as required by FSFM/DFD.
Other requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida drivers' license.
- Must possess an honorable military discharge if applicant has been service connected.
- Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
- Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Must endure a personal, professional, and moral background investigation to determine honesty, maturity, and dependability.
- Must be able to work weekends and nights.
Licenses/Certifications
- Must possess a State of Florida Fire Officer I Certification.
- Must possess a State of Florida Firefighter/EMT Certification.
Comments:
This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
