UC San Diego's Government and Community Relations (GCR) department supports the University's mission to transform California and a diverse global society by: educating students; generating and disseminating knowledge and creative works; treating patients; and engaging in public service. GCR works as a strong, coherent, integrated, and efficient team that provides outstanding service to internal and external stakeholders. The department also implements comprehensive programs of relationship development, management, and engagement in support of strategic partnerships in order to safeguard and increase public resources in support of UC San Diego's mission of education, research, healthcare, and service. GCR reports to the Associate Chancellor/Chief of Staff within the Chancellor's Office VC Area.
Reporting to the Executive Director State and Local Government & Community Relations and with work direction from the Director of Health Community Relations, the Assistant Director of Health Local Government & Community Relations serves as the expert on campus in local government and community relations for UC San Diego & UC San Diego Health as it relates to the County of San Diego, cities within San Diego County, stakeholder groups, business entities, non-profit organizations, civic groups and other community organizations to establish and maintain the highest level relationships amongst these groups and UC San Diego Health. The Assistant Director of Health Local Government & Community Relations has experience successfully maintaining effective relations with public officials, community and neighborhood groups, and public and private agencies throughout the region on special institutional priorities. Oversees plans to develop and implement local government and community outreach strategies for specific programs, events, activities, policies, and constituency groups to promote awareness and good will to the general public on behalf of UC San Diego and UC San Diego Health.
Provides leadership and management of community outreach programs as part of the development, launch, and maintenance of UC San Diego's Health's outreach strategy for the region, and to advance Health Sciences' and Health system's key initiatives. Plays an integral leadership role in UC San Diego Health's expansion plans and efforts with the community and government officials to aid in the university's Health mission and raising awareness of UC San Diego Health's profile.
Works closely with the UC Office of the President and UC San Diego Health leadership to support annual Community Benefit and Community Health Needs Assessment deliverables to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements. The Assistant Director has a leading role in representing the department, University and Health system to the general public and applicable agencies. Promotes a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion, respect and superior customer service to internal and external constituents.
Three (3) years experience in government relations at an academic medical center, higher education institution, or similar experience with an elected official, government agency, or relevant trade association.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the legislative process and how these activities can / will impact the campus and / or medical center and strong skills in reading and interpreting proposed legislation.
Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal and external constituencies.
Strategic planning skills with the ability to develop and implement effective local government and community outreach strategies.
Thorough knowledge of public policy. Thorough knowledge of healthcare public policy with a focus on city and county policy.
