About the Facility - William Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC is a historic hospital complex and national historic district located at Columbia, South Carolina. The district encompasses 19 contributing buildings and a covered walk. Most of the oldest buildings are two- to three-story brick structures and feature a Georgian Colonial Revival architectural style. The original buildings date back to 1932, with additional buildings completed in 1937, 1945, and 1946. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter named the hospital after U.S. Representative from South Carolina, William Jennings Bryan Dorn. The complex includes the hospital recreation, dining, and residential buildings and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The hospital provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health services, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiology, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, extended care, and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to) - All blocks must be correctly embedded and adequately oriented.
- There must be no loss of any specimen.
- There must be no cross-contamination of any specimens.
- All tissue must be sections without artifacts.
- Slide labels must be 100% accurate.
- Performs and documents quality control as required by laboratory policies.
- Performs equipment maintenance as required by laboratory policies. Notifies supervisor as required.
- Displays a team-approach to all tasks.
- Assists all co-workers with required tasks. Portrays a productive and cooperative attitude throughout the workday and especially in stressful situations.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS - Must have two years of experience in a health care field that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides and understanding of the work such as, but not limited to, a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) or health technician - OR - Four academic years above high school leading to a bachelors degree with courses related to the occupation such as biological science or chemistry; or successful completion of two academic years of study above high school that included at least 24 semester hours in Chemistry and/or in appropriate fields of biological science and successful completion of a 12-month program of education and training in histopathology - OR - Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable (six months experience and two years education above high school that included at least six semester hours in health care related courses such as biological science, surgical technician courses, etc.)
- At least two years' experience with routine and complex histopathological and cytopathological procedures to include handling cell blocks, frozen sections, bone marrows, autopsies, and fine-need biopsies as well as preparing technically adequate slides of surgical, cytology, and autopsy specimens by processing, embedding tissue, cutting, staining (including immunohistochemistry), and cover slipping.
- Registry/certification in Histology from ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology).
TERMS Base assignment is from 5/1/2022 to 4/30/2023
