Archival Collections Internship
Location
Santa Fe, NM | United States
Job description
SFI seeks candidates with a strong interest in the history of science and a propensity for hands-on research and deep-dive assignments for a part-time, paid internship working in our archive. This is a temporary position, three months long, with the potential for an extension of another three months after the original term is complete. The Archival Collections Intern will help facilitate the organization and accession of SFI’s historical and born-digital records, and the management of archival data. This is an in-person internship, on-site in Santa Fe, working an expected 20 hours per week; there may be some scheduling flexibility for the right candidate. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in careers in archival, library, and museum collections spaces to gain valuable work experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Archival Collections Intern will be under the direct supervision of the Archivist, at the discretion of the Office of the President. Internship responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Receipt of off-site materials for extensible processing, arrangement, and formal accession. The intern will be instructed on the proper handling of different media types and will need to ensure that any previously inadequately filed records are reprocessed in accordance with SAA archival standards and SFI’s individual processing standards, as determined by the Archivist.
- Maintenance of a workspace with access to a document scanner; refreshment of specific records and resources for digital use at the discretion of the Archivist. Intern will also be given access to a handheld scanner and will be tasked with verifying that all barcodes are in compliance with SFI classifications and reference codes.
- Data entry and use of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe applications to enter various data in several different locations and formats.
- Occasional travel between both SFI campuses and the off-site archival storage areas at the discretion of the Archivist. While archival storage is fairly centrally located, neither the Cowan or Miller campuses of SFI are accessible via public transportation. Candidate can expect to spend most workdays at the Cowan (our main) campus.
