Position Overview

As a Perishables Inspector , you are responsible for the daily inspection of inbound and outbound product; product is located in the warehouse coolers. Your ongoing responsibilities include: monitoring product expiration dates or best use date; monitoring product for proper slotting and addressing product problems with the supervisor/manager; and documentation and reporting of inventory and load rejections utilizing Microsoft office software.
*THIS IS A SECOND SHIFT POSITION, 3 days a week -Wed, Thu and Fri 3:30 pm to 5 am.
Responsibilities
Inspection:
- Ensure quality of merchandise by inspecting inbound perishable commodities in accordance with company guidelines and USDA standards for grades of produce commodities and cold chain compliance; inspecting fresh items according to company specifications; preparing, reviewing, and analyzing reports; handling freight manually.
- Responsible for the daily quality inspection of product; monitor product expiration dates or best use dates; notify the Buying Department on any item approaching its expiration date.
- Maintain quality of perishable merchandise by ensuring sell-by-date are adhered to; determine and ensure items are slotted in proper cooler according to temperature guidelines; monitor storage temperatures; ensure items are in proper rotation; perform daily inspections and physical checks on items; determine accountability for sell-by-date pulls; prepare, review, and analyze reports; and move freight manually.
- Ripen, process, and condition bananas, pears, avocados, honeydew, and papaya and other produce to Grocers Supply specifications; distinguish color variation to determine product quality and condition.
- May be responsible for monitoring cooler temperatures to insure proper storage temperature and cold chain compliance.
Clerical:
- Work closely with the warehouse inventory personnel to insure that any inventory adjustments, quality issues, rotation issues, or date issues are handled accurately and quickly.
- Become familiar with the warehouse computer applications in order to insure accurate inventory adjustments and to properly located product. Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel will be used on a daily basis.
- Maintain records containing inventory and quality reports; complete various inspection forms; edit documents; enter data into speadsheets that utilize formulas. This individual will communicate with individuals on a regular basis using email.
- Use Ditial camera daily to document product quality; take photos effectively, download images, and attach images to various documents.
- Determining load damage percentages, rejection rates, etc. using basic math.
- Communicate with individuals or groups verbally and/or writing (e.g. customers, suppliers, fellow employees)
General:
- Follow company policies, procedures, guidelines, and compliance requirements when inspecting products for quality and damage.
- Make effective choices using policies, procedures, and/or guides. Recognize what could be an issue; inform those who can resolve it.
- Take immediate action within the scope of responsibilities.
- Ensure work is performed and completed correctly; make a consistent effort to obtain desired results, meet deadlines, take immediate action to resolve issues to work can be completed on time.
- Demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior in all work situations; report ethical and compliance issues promptly.
- Other duties as assigned.
