Research Scientist (RIPE) - Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology is a team-science based Interdisciplinary Research Institute at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The mission of the IGB is to advance life science research at the University, meaningfully engage with the public to share the impact of genomic research, and to stimulate bio-economic development in the state of Illinois.
Job Summary The Research Scientist will translate approaches for improving legume canopy photosynthesis to cowpea. Using translational genomics and gene editing, the incumbent will identify novel genes for altering canopy architecture and test those in planta.
Duties & Responsibilities - Identify novel targets for manipulating cowpea canopy architecture.
- Design experiments to identify novel transcripts associated with canopy architecture.
- Design transgenic approaches to alter canopy architecture.
- Report results to funders on a quarterly basis.
- Write the first draft of peer-reviewed publications.
- Co-supervise undergraduate students to assist with genotyping and phenotyping cowpea lines.
- Maintain a safe laboratory and field site environment.
- Report research to the plant science community in regional and national meetings.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and RIPE project meetings.
Additional Physical Demands Position will entail laboratory and field research.
Minimum Qualifications PhD in Plant Science or related field. Specific research experience in plant genetics, plant breeding and plant molecular biology; documented publication record in top disciplinary journals.
Preferred Qualifications 5 years of post-doctoral experience in plant science, plant breeding or phenotyping. Experience supervising undergraduate students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Plant molecular biology experience (PCR, genotyping, qPCR), gene editing experience; prior work with plant genetics; prior experience with team science.
- Plant physiological analysis (gas exchange, cholorophyll fluorescence).
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 2/16/2024. The minimum salary for this position is $55,000 per year.
