Job description
VES LLC is seeking a Controller to join our growing team. As the Controller you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations, accounting functions, and compliance activities of the organization. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and optimizing our financial processes to support our growth and strategic objectives. This position can be performed remotely, but local candidates to the Maryland or Michigan area would be preferred.
Essential Job Functions include, but not limited to, the following:
- Lead and manage the financial reporting process, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and other management reports.
- Build, manage and mentor a team of finance professionals, fostering their growth, development, and performance.
- Provide strategic financial insights and analysis to support decision-making, budgeting, and resource allocation within the government contracting division.
- Work closely with external auditors, parent company and government agencies to ensure accurate and timely completion of audits, reviews, and compliance requirements.
- Monitor and analyze cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to support operational needs and investment decisions.
- Lead the preparation and submission of government contract proposals, ensuring compliance with financial and accounting regulations.
- Stay updated on changes in government contracting regulations, accounting standards, and industry trends to ensure the company's continued compliance and competitive advantage.
Daily Job Functions include, but not limited to, the following:
- Ensures all transactions are recorded in accordance with US generally accepted accounting principles GAAP and other regulations where appropriate
- Review federal government FFP, CP, FPLOE, and T&M invoices for accuracy before they are input through various invoicing portals.
- Monitor Aged Receivables report and work with management to address outstanding receivables over 30 days.
- Maintain the day-to-day cash operations
- Oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals
- Help identify and resolve billing/invoice issues. Ensure VES invoices comply with all applicable regulations of government contracting and billing instructions.
- Post A/P, after review for proper account application, and ensure contract funding supports the amounts billed to us.
- Update project information (i.e., modification value, date, description, and period of performance, etc.) in Unanet.
- Prepare annual indirect cost proposals, and respond to any questions from CMS/DCAA.
- Work closely with the CEO and COO to report financials as needed.
- Respond timely to inquiries in verbal and written communications.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Applicants must possess any education, training or experience necessary to perform all essential duties and responsibilities associated with the position. Education, training and experience indicative of an individual's ability to perform all essential job duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in government contracts
- CPA (Preferred) or equivalent experience
- Strong understanding of government contracting regulations, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).
- Understanding of T&M, FFP, FPLOE, and Cost-Plus billing is a must
- Experience using Unanet or other government contracting accounting system required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills
- Self-starter, capable of working independently and within a team
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment, demonstrating flexibility and the capacity to handle multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Security Clearance.
- Prior experience with a Native American culture and Native American hiring preferences.
