Job description
Position Summary:
The Outdoor Program Specialist- Assistant Camp Director focusing in ropes course facilitation is responsible for developing and implementing progressive, safe, challenging experiences. This position will be responsible for developing year-round weekend program and community programs, and being the Assistant Camp Director during the summer at Camp Butternut Springs, Valparaiso, IN. Candidates can generally be expected to work 37.5 hours per week, including most weekends during August – May; and then Sunday – Friday hours during June, July and early August (during summer camp).
Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement safe and attainable progression of teambuilding activities, low and high rope course, climbing tower and zipline elements for campers and groups
- Responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carryout low and high ropes activities
- Teach and monitor proper use of climbing tower and ropes course elements and equipment
- Supervise and schedule ropes course facilitators
- Follow standard rules applicable to ropes courses. Ensure all participants and staff know and understand all ropes course safety rules.
- Assist in recruitment of ropes course facilitators
- Responsible for training camp staff of expectations while supervising a group of campers at the ropes course
- Conduct daily check of climbing tower and ropes course equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good condition
- Maintain records of equipment in the Ropes Course Equipment Log daily, indicating any repairs, and retiring equipment promptly.
- Coordinate orders for equipment and supplies as needed
- Assist with set up of ropes course prior to and during staff training and winterizing ropes course and taking down equipment at the end of season
- Responsible for initial and end of season inventory
- Develop and implement plan to offer programs to community
- Experience in several areas of camp programming to support outdoor program delivery during late fall, winter, and spring
- Other duties as assigned in support of Outdoor program
Required Experience, Skills and Qualifications
- Must be 18+ years old and a high school graduate
- Knowledge of the outdoors and 1-3 years experience working with children in a camp setting or equivalent
- 3 – 5 years minimum of experience facilitating team building activities and ropes course programs with a focus on teamwork, trust, and cooperation
- 3-year experience with rock climbing wall and high ropes course programs
- Current ACCT certificatory or equivalent documented experience
- 2 – 5 years’ experience in leadership and supervising roles
- Must attend, participate in and successfully demonstrate required skills during pre-season mandatory ropes course facilitator training.
- Ability to manage time effectively and independently
- Organized and detailed
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to all camp locations on a weekly basis.
- Essential physical, visual and auditory functions:
- Must be able to identify emergency situations and respond appropriately.
- Possess strength and stamina for weekend programs. Stamina includes the ability to remain alert, friendly, courteous, and patient providing excellent customer service
Additional requirements:
- Must be certified in First Aid, CPR, and obtain their Mandated Reporter training certificate. Training provided by GSGCNWI.
- Membership with Girls Scouts of the USA, or willingness to become a member with the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Work environment:
Candidates should be willing to work in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, which includes working irregular hours, with limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects, exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions, and limited technology while at camp.
