Job Description and Duties

SENIOR STATE ARCHEOLOGIST - CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION / ARCHEOLOGICAL RESEARCH

The Senior State Archaeologist supervises and directs a major unit of professional archaeological staff within the Department’s Cultural Resources Division. The incumbent holds full administrative responsibility for the State Archaeological Collections Research Facility. The primary and immediate responsibility is supporting Tribes with the repatriation of archaeological collections as required by NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA. The incumbent coordinates between the Archaeological Research Program and related programs to perform research that ensures the timely delivery of information in support of the department's legal obligations under Assembly Bill 275. The Senior State Archaeologist advises department leadership, legislative bodies, commissions, and partner agencies on findings related to the management of data records and systems for the department. This position makes difficult technical decisions for archaeological collections and research; formulates cultural resource management programs and research plans; and makes recommendations to upper management regarding cultural resource-related issues; along with other related work.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position is designated as telework eligible-office centered.
