MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree with a major in geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science, geophysics, or geological engineering followed by four years of professional level experience in geological research, geological field work, petroleum geology, or mining geology, coastal geology, hydrological geology, environmental geology and/or other geological sub disciplines.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science, geophysics, or geological engineering will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience.
A doctorate in geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science, geophysics, or geological engineering will substitute for a maximum of three years of the required experience.
NOTE:
Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of three years of the required experience.
NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Function of Work:
To perform extremely complex, advanced and controversial geological evaluations and studies relative to the identification, investigation, exploration, development, protection, and regulation of the state's natural resources.
Level of Work:
Advanced.
Supervision Received:
Broad review from a Geologist Supervisor or higher-level administrator.
Supervision Exercised:
May exercise direct line supervision over subordinate geologists, environmentalists, classified employees, and contract employees.

Department of Natural Resources; Department of Environmental Quality.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Geologist 2 by the presence of responsibility to serve as the sole Geologist for a particular division located in a district or regional office, with possible supervision over lower level professional personnel.
Differs from Geologist Supervisor by absence of responsibility for supervising a major geologic section.
Differs from Geologist DCL by the absence of responsibility acting as a principal assistant to a Geologist Supervisor.
Obtains, assembles and interprets appropriate geological, hydrological and engineering data from a variety of sources in order to construct surface and subsurface maps of geologic structures, sand bodies, stratigraphic units (isopachs, etc.) for controversial and highly complex geological analyses, and for complex reservoir field and regional analyses in order to determine the characteristics of the reservoirs, mineral deposits, coastal sand body geometrics, overburden, and aquifers in qualitative and quantitative terms.
Administers area specific projects and programs such as geographical or functional district areas.
Participates and provides expert testimony at public and regulatory hearings regarding coastal erosion.
Provides guidance, direction, geological and technical support on sensitive issues or geologically related matters serving in an advisory capacity during conferences and meetings with representatives of industry, the general public, and federal, state, and parish agencies to resolve a particular regulatory matter.
Conducts geologic studies to investigate unresolved matters relative to the management and dissemination of geologic data.
Works with industry to insuring compliance with appropriate state rules and regulations; develops environmental risk assessments or environmental impact statements.
Disseminates information to the general public, industry representatives, consultants and federal, state and parish agencies and officials on various geological projects and the State's position on regulations, policies and procedures for specific projects (e.g., secondary recovery, leasing requirements, directional drilling analyses, alternative to unit well, overburden handling procedures, identification, characterization, and protection of water and other natural resources).
Develops geological projects and programs pertaining to extremely complex, highly controversial and unique geologic matters such as local and regional studies, resource evaluations, and geologic research.
Acts as the geological advisor for the section in the absence of the Geologist Supervisor at meetings, hearings, and conferences.
