Job description

Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus , an affiliate of RWJBarnabas Health, is a fully accredited acute care hospital dedicated to providing the finest medical and health care services to the residents of Ocean and Monmouth counties.

The Histology Assistant position assists the pathologist during the gross processing of surgical specimens.

Responsibilities:

• Accurately coverslips and labels prepared slides, matches them to working drafts and arranges them for screening by the cytologists
• Enters patient and specimen information into the Pathology Information system
• Enters patient charges into the Hospital Information system
• Performs maintenance of tissue processing instrument
• Performs rapid H & E and Diff-quik staining on tissue specimen slides
• Prepares smears and cytospins from body fluid specimens in accordance with established procedures
• Prepares specimens by Frozen Section technique
• Prepares tissue specimens for gross examination
• Procures specimens from the OR, Special Procedures, and Same Day Surgery areas of the hospital
• Responsible for filing slides in accordance with established procedure
• Responsible for staining of all cytology slices using the modified Pap Stain procedure
• Responsible for the daily rotation and filtration of stains, alcohol, and xylene
• Verified that required information has been provided on the requisitions and that the specimen has been properly submitted, fixed and labeled per the patient ID policy
• Performs all other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent required
• Classes in biology and related sciences preferred
