Position description Dr. Amanda Brewster and Dr. Hector Rodriguez, directors of the UC Berkeley Center for Healthcare Organizational and Innovation Research (CHOIR) are seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar who aspires to become an independent quantitative health services researcher. CHOIR conducts studies of the organization and delivery of health services in order to improve the effectiveness of care and, ultimately, accountability for population health. We emphasize innovations in health care delivery and assessment of organizational performance to improve the technical quality of care delivered, patient experience and outcomes of care, population health, and cost. The Postdoctoral Scholar would join CHOIR and the Division of Health Policy and Management within the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will join a collaborative project to combine organizational data, contextual data, and the Medicaid T-MSIS Analytic Files (TAF) to examine the effects of organizational changes on health outcomes for Medicaid beneficiaries. The project is focused on primary care and home and community based service (HCBS) provider organizations. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to conduct analyses related to existing project aims and will also have opportunities to develop and lead their own manuscripts that leverage the project data, as well as to propose new ideas using the available data resources.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will take advantage of the many resources available at Berkeley Public Health (e.g., colloquia, workshops, faculty expertise) for professional development. Funding for conference travel and professional development is available. Remote work is possible and negotiable, but some in-person presence is strongly preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities will include:
- Under the mentorship of the supervising (faculty or researcher) conduct independent research using the T-MSIS Analytic Files (TAF) and survey and other administrative data files.
- Assist with data management and analytic file creation.
- Participate in project meetings and regular research lab meetings
- Contribute to and lead manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Contribute to Institutional Review Board protocol development
- Mentor junior student team members
- Engage in professional development activities (e.g., colloquium attendance, conference presentations, and networking opportunities)

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree)
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
- No more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment
Preferred qualifications - Ph.D. in Health Policy, Public Policy, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or other related social, behavioral, or population science health field.
- Strong quantitative data analysis skills
- Fluency in Stata or R
- Familiarity with quasi-experimental research methods
- Experience in analyzing Medicaid administrative data is a strong plus
- Evidence of substantial contributions to published research
- Background in US health policy, including Medicaid policy reforms
