Department Information

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Under moderate supervision prepares routine and administrative tasks in support of the procurement and inventory function for the department.
  • Prepares purchase orders by verifying specifications and prices.
  • Identifies the most appropriate supplier for a designated product, determines availability and confirms delivery requirements and timeline.
  • Verifies receipt of items by comparing items received to items ordered; resolves shipment errors with suppliers.
  • Performs inventory audits and inventory reconciliation. Prepares reports of findings to management.
  • Works closely with the lab personnel and clinical research specialists to ensure adequate levels of supplies are always available to use in the labs and the kit production center.
  • Restocks shelves on a first in, first out (FIFO) basis and ensures products are kept neat, organized, and easily accessible.
General Responsibilities
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the shipping/receiving area, which includes overseeing the shipping, receiving, logging, storing, and delivering packages, equipment, and mail at the facility.
  • Monitors the asset lifecycle and coordinates directly with constituents to ensure appropriate disposition of equipment. Provides reporting to management on the status of assets campus-wide, ensures the accuracy and integrity of data.
  • Inputs delivery information into the department's receiving tracking software and scan/attach packing slips to purchase orders.
  • Receives, tags, stores, retires, scans for the annual physical inventory, and delivers department-related capital assets.
  • Tracks equipment loan and return documentation to complete in a timely manner and within department guidelines. Keep the storage room clean and in good working order.
  • Provides process improvement suggestions for the department and manages temporary staff.
Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 4 years in inventory control or other related field.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate. It involves remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time as well as moving around the work environment. The position requires moving and assembling objects and placing objects on high and low shelving units and storage racks. The role requires the ability to detect details of objects and the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$35,651.20 - $44,116.80 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
